WHERE JAZZ MEETS
THE WORLD OF UNDER MILK WOOD
One of the most celebrated works in British jazz history will be brought vividly to life at Neuadd Dwyfor, Pwllheli, on Tuesday 14 July 2026, when Stan Tracey’s acclaimed Under Milk Wood Jazz Suite is performed in a special concert produced by Ad/Lib Cymru featuring broadcaster Sian Lloyd and actor Ieuan Rhys.
Inspired by Dylan Thomas’s iconic radio play Under Milk Wood, Stan Tracey’s masterpiece is widely regarded as one of the finest achievements in British jazz. First recorded in 1965, the suite captures the humour, poetry, mystery and humanity of Thomas’s fictional Welsh village, Llareggub, through a series of evocative and unforgettable compositions.
This special performance unites the worlds of jazz, literature and theatre, with Dave Cottle leading an outstanding ensemble and Sian Lloyd and Ieuan Rhys bringing additional dramatic resonance to Thomas’s timeless words. Together, the music and narration create an immersive tribute to one of Wales’s greatest literary works and one of British jazz’s most enduring masterpieces.
The very special guest in Pwllheli will be international saxophonist Alan Barnes. His recorded catalogue is immense. He has made over thirty albums as leader and co-leader alone, and the list of his session and side-man work includes Bjork, Bryan Ferry, Michel LeGrande, Clare Teale, Westlife, Jools Holland and Jamie Cullum. In British jazz, the young Barnes was recognized – and hired – by the established greats of the time: Stan Tracy, John Dankworth, Kenny Baker, Bob Wilber, and Humphrey Lyttelton.
