This was one of my weirder experiences as a new mum

People would be meeting the baby for the first time; “oh he’s so cute!” “He looks like you!”, all the usual baby reactions

But these were promptly followed by “when’s the next one then?”

What?

My stitches haven’t even healed yet

I can barely get dressed on my own

I have to use the door handle to lower myself onto the toilet

I’m not even sure what day it is

Birth is traumatic for so many mums, so why are we instantly asking when she’s going to go through it again?

Why can’t we put all of this attention onto the miracle she’s just grown and birthed?

Why do we feel the need to rush into having more when we’ve barely gotten to enjoy the one we have?

If you feel “so when’s the next one?” Bubbling up, here are some phrases you can try instead:
“Oh I bet you’re loving all those newborn snuggles!”
“What a cutie! I bet you love them sooo much!”
“Hey! You just gave birth! That’s amazing! Here’s a million pounds!”
