'A bouncy castle is no longer de rigueur in Ireland for the Catholic celebration – today’s children expect far more,' the Sunday Times reported last weekend, writes Tanya Sweeney.
The 80s child in me, whose Communion day highlight included getting to try the bitter lemon drink my mum ordered in the pub, is fully aghast at the thought of a €5,000 celebration.
I told my husband as much as I tutted about it all in a classic ‘man shakes fist at cloud’ moment. I groused about how Communion days are no longer Communion days, but Communion weekends, and that our seven-year-old will definitely be getting a much more sober affair when her time comes. “You say that now,” he said wryly.
And he’s right, of course.
But I’m willing to wager that the vast majority of parents don’t have this kind of money in reality and that Communion year presents more financial pressure than anyone is ever really letting on...
