Florist vs. The Supermarket this valentines

People often asked why florist flowers cost more than supermarket flowers. After all, a rose is a rose… right?

Not quite.

The biggest misconception is that florists and supermarkets sell the same flowers — and that supermarkets are simply cheaper because they buy in bulk. While bulk buying plays a small part, the real reason for the price difference is quality.

Florists don’t buy the same flowers as supermarkets.

Florist flowers are grown for scent, beauty, and bloom size. They’re cut once they begin to open, cooled slowly, transported in water, and carefully packed to prevent damage. This extra care means fuller flowers, stronger stems, richer fragrance, and a much longer vase life.

Supermarket flowers are grown for speed and cost-efficiency. They’re cut before opening, cooled quickly, shipped without water, tightly packed, and sold in bulk. While convenient and affordable, they’re smaller, unscented, and don’t last as long.

A florist-quality rose typically cost more per stem because it’s graded (A) for quality head size and longevity. Supermarket roses costs are lower because they’re grown and handled to a lower grade B

Supermarket flowers have their place — they’re quick, easy, and budget-friendly. But when you choose a florist, you’re not just supporting a small business. You’re investing in luxury flowers that smell beautiful, look stunning, and last far longer in your home.
