For anyone who watched it at the time, V was a sci-fi drama that will have stuck with you all these years later.

On the surface, it began with a simple premise: huge alien motherships hovering silently over the worldโ€™s major cities, their occupants claiming to come in peace. The Visitors looked human, spoke calmly, and promised advanced technology in exchange for help with resources. Governments welcomed them. The public relaxed. And thatโ€™s exactly what made it so terrifying.

Because beneath the polite smiles and red uniforms was something far darker. As the story unfolded, the truth was revealed in moments that are still talked about today โ€” the synthetic human skin, the reptilian faces underneath, and scenes so shocking they genuinely stunned viewers. Guinea pigs, live animals, and the realisation that humanity itself was on the menu. This was family TV that didnโ€™t play safe.

What really elevated V, though, was how grounded it felt. At its heart, it wasnโ€™t just about aliens โ€” it was about power, propaganda, fear and control. Scientists were silenced. The media was manipulated. Ordinary people were pressured into choosing sides. Some collaborated. Others resisted. The blood-red โ€œVโ€ sprayed across posters became a symbol of rebellion that felt raw and meaningful, especially to viewers who picked up on its clear parallels with 20th-century totalitarianism.

Characters like Julie Parrish, Michael Donovan, Diana and Martin gave the story emotional weight, while the performances made the threat feel real. The tone was serious, often grim, and unapologetically tense โ€” a far cry from lighter sci-fi of the era.

Even decades later, V holds up as peak 80s television: ambitious, frightening, and genuinely thought-provoking. It wasnโ€™t just sci-fi spectacle โ€” it was a warning, wrapped in red uniforms and hovering spaceships. And for many of us, it was absolutely unforgettable.
