22 OCTOBER RACE MEETING – ABANDONED
It is with great sadness and frustration that we have to announce that our race meeting on Thursday 22 October will not be going ahead.
Following a course inspection with the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), a combination of limited grass growth and a lack of moisture in the ground means that we are unable to provide the safe and suitable racing surface required for the meeting to take place.
This decision has not been taken lightly, and we have done everything within our power to try to get the course ready. Working closely with our agronomist, we have carried out liquid fertiliser applications, wetting agents, verti-draining, reseeding and scarifying, alongside watering where possible.
Unfortunately, the exceptionally dry conditions have significantly limited grass growth. Since 1 July, we have received less than three inches of rainfall, alongside exceptionally high temperatures.
Ludlow's gravel-based soil also means we are particularly vulnerable to prolonged dry weather, as it does not retain moisture in the same way as clay or loam-based ground. Our access to water is also extremely limited during the summer months, meaning we have had to carefully manage our available supplies.
We know this will be hugely disappointing for everyone who was looking forward to the meeting, and we share that disappointment. We would like to thank our members, racegoers, owners, trainers, sponsors and everyone who continues to support Ludlow Racecourse.
For anyone who has purchased tickets for 22 October, please contact the racecourse office from Monday to arrange a refund or to discuss moving your tickets to another fixture.
