๐Ÿ“ข Diabetes Awareness Week | 8thโ€“14th June ๐Ÿ’™

This week, weโ€™re shining a spotlight on diabetes and the millions of people affected by it every day.

Diabetes is a condition that affects how the body processes blood glucose (sugar). With the right support, education, and management, people living with diabetes can lead full, healthy lives.

๐Ÿ”น Did you know?
An interesting fact is that approximately 1 in 10 people worldwide are living with diabetes, and many more are at risk of developing it. Early detection and healthy lifestyle choices can make a significant difference in preventing or delaying Type 2 diabetes.

๐Ÿ’ก Know the common symptoms:
โœ”๏ธ Increased thirst
โœ”๏ธ Frequent urination
โœ”๏ธ Unexplained weight loss
โœ”๏ธ Fatigue
โœ”๏ธ Blurred vision

This Diabetes Awareness Week, take a moment to learn more about diabetes, support those living with the condition, and encourage healthy habits in your community.

๐Ÿ’™ Together, we can raise awareness, reduce stigma, and promote better health for everyone.

We are proud to now be a Sun Safe Nursery, accredited by SKCIN (The Karen Clifford Skin Cancer Charity). This accreditation recognises our commitment to protecting children from harmful UV exposure and promoting safe sun practices throughout the nursery.

As part of our Sun Safe approach, we encourage children to wear sun hats and protective clothing, apply sunscreen regularly, stay hydrated, and enjoy shaded outdoor areas during warmer weather. We also work closely with families to help raise awareness of the importance of sun safety from an early age.

๐Ÿ’š Mental Health Awareness Matters for Everyone ๐Ÿ’š

At nursery, we recognise that mental health and wellbeing is important not only for children, but for parents and staff too. Creating a happy, supportive and understanding environment helps everyone thrive. ๐ŸŒฟ

For children, we promote emotional wellbeing through nurturing relationships, mindfulness, calm spaces and helping them understand and express their feelings.

For staff, we encourage a supportive team environment where wellbeing, communication and self-care are valued. Working in childcare is incredibly rewarding, but also emotionally demanding, so checking in with one another and offering support is so important. ๐Ÿ’ฌ

For parents and carers, we understand that family life can sometimes feel overwhelming. We aim to provide a welcoming, non-judgemental environment where families feel listened to, supported and valued. ๐Ÿค

Simple ways we can all support positive mental health:

๐Ÿ’š Taking time to talk and listen
๐Ÿ’š Encouraging rest, routine and balance
๐Ÿ’š Spending time outdoors and staying active
๐Ÿ’š Asking for help when needed
๐Ÿ’š Showing kindness to ourselves and others
๐Ÿ’š Remembering that itโ€™s okay to have difficult days

By working together, we can create a community where everyone feels safe, supported and cared for. ๐ŸŒˆ

๐Ÿ’š Promoting Positive Mental Health at Nursery ๐Ÿ’š

At nursery, supporting childrenโ€™s emotional wellbeing is just as important as supporting their learning and development. We help children feel safe, valued, listened to and understood every single day. ๐ŸŒˆ

Here are some of the ways we promote positive mental health and emotional wellbeing:

๐Ÿง˜ Mindfulness time every day to help children relax, regulate emotions and feel calm.
๐Ÿงธ Quiet and calm spaces within the nursery where children can take time away when needed.
๐ŸŽจ Learning to acknowledge, understand and identify emotions through stories and activities such as The Colour Monster.
๐Ÿ’› Yellow = happy ๐Ÿ˜Š
๐Ÿ’™ Blue = sad ๐Ÿ˜ข
โค๏ธ Red = angry ๐Ÿ˜
๐Ÿ’š Green = calm ๐Ÿ˜Œ

๐ŸŽญ Encouraging children to express themselves through movement, music, role play, creativity and sensory experiences.
๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Supporting children to talk about their feelings and helping them understand that all emotions are okay.
๐Ÿค Building positive relationships and secure attachments with familiar adults.
๐ŸŒฟ Promoting kindness, sharing, turn-taking and respect for others.
๐Ÿ“š Using stories and group discussions to explore feelings, friendships and emotions.
๐Ÿ’ค Providing opportunities for rest and relaxation throughout the day.

We believe children thrive when they feel emotionally secure, confident and supported. ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ’š May is Coeliac Awareness Month ๐Ÿ’š

This month is dedicated to raising awareness of coeliac disease, a serious autoimmune condition that affects both children and adults.

For people with coeliac disease, eating gluten (found in wheat, barley and rye) causes the immune system to react and damage the gut. This isnโ€™t a lifestyle choice or a โ€œfood preferenceโ€ โ€“ itโ€™s a lifelong medical condition that requires a strict gluten-free diet.

๐ŸŒฟ In children, signs can sometimes include:
โœจ Ongoing tummy pain or bloating
โœจ Poor growth or weight gain
โœจ Fatigue or low energy
โœจ Diarrhoea or constipation
โœจ Being generally โ€œunder the weatherโ€ without clear reason

๐ŸŒฟ In adults, symptoms can vary and may include:
โœจ Digestive discomfort or IBS-type symptoms
โœจ Tiredness and brain fog
โœจ Anaemia or vitamin deficiencies
โœจ Headaches or joint pain
โœจ Unexplained weight loss

Some people may have very clear symptoms, while others may have few or none โ€“ which is why diagnosis can sometimes take time.

๐Ÿ’š The only treatment for coeliac disease is a strict gluten-free diet for life, which helps the gut heal and prevents long-term complications.

At home, in nurseries, schools, and social settings, awareness and understanding can make a huge difference:
๐Ÿ’› Careful attention to food labels and cross-contamination
๐Ÿ’› Inclusive meal planning so no one feels left out
๐Ÿ’› Understanding that โ€œjust a little bitโ€ of gluten is harmful
๐Ÿ’› Supporting children to feel safe and included at mealtimes

This month is a reminder that food safety is health care for those living with coeliac disease โ€“ and small acts of awareness help make everyday life easier and safer ๐Ÿ’š

Letโ€™s support, include, and raise awareness together ๐Ÿ’ซ

๐Ÿ’™ May is Hypermobility Awareness Month ๐Ÿ’™

This month is all about shining a light on hypermobility โ€“ a condition where joints move beyond the typical range expected. While it might sound harmless (or even like โ€œjust being very flexibleโ€), for many children it can come with real challenges.

In little ones, hypermobility can sometimes look like:
โœจ Tiring more quickly than peers
โœจ Complaining of aches or โ€œgrowing painsโ€
โœจ W-sitting or unusual sitting positions for comfort
โœจ Difficulty with balance, coordination or stamina
โœจ Being extra flexible in joints like fingers, knees or elbows

Every child is unique, and for some, hypermobility has little impact day-to-day. For others, it can affect confidence, participation in activities, and how their body feels during play, learning and rest.

At nursery and at home, small adjustments can make a big difference:
๐Ÿ’› Encouraging frequent movement breaks
๐Ÿ’› Supporting good sitting positions
๐Ÿ’› Offering strengthening play (climbing, pushing, pulling games)
๐Ÿ’› Listening when children say theyโ€™re tired or sore
๐Ÿ’› Celebrating what they can do, not just whatโ€™s tricky

Raising awareness helps us all spot needs earlier and support children in a way that builds confidence, comfort and joy in movement ๐Ÿ’ซ

If youโ€™ve heard your child talk about being โ€œbendyโ€, getting tired quickly, or struggling with coordination, itโ€™s always worth chatting with a health professional for reassurance.

๐Ÿ’™ Letโ€™s help every child feel strong, supported and understood this May ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿฆ‹ Our Caterpillar Journey in Nursery! ๐Ÿ›

Last term we had such a lovely time observing our caterpillars. The children watched 5 tiny caterpillars grow, change and eventually form their cocoons. It was amazing to see the whole life cycle happen right in front of us!

Unfortunately, the butterflies were a little late to make their appearance and sadly the children missed them hatching due to half term. They finally emerged just after the Easter weekend ๐Ÿฃโœจ

Here are a few photos from their transformationโ€ฆ can you spot the butterflyโ€™s tongue? ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿฆ‹

What a magical experience for the children to follow and learn about natureโ€™s life cycle!
