The Island is a self-funded multi use arts facility and creation centre based in the old police station in Bristol city centre. It hosts a wide variety of creative spaces from circus training, dance and rehearsal rooms, making spaces and artists studios to dark rooms, recording and music production studios, a gallery and a suite of early 20th century police cells. If you want to get involved in a

collaborative showcase event in Bristol then the Island is the place to do it. Like the name suggests, the Island is an isolated centre of creativity and energy located smack bang in the city centre. As a venue, it has so many unique event spaces and a can-do attitude making it ideal for a Bristol event. The Island is part of the Artspace Lifespace project, an artist led initiative that recycles vacant, under-used and problem properties into thriving active creative resources and has been active since 2008.

We’re delighted to host Images of Broken Light Which Dance Before Me, a photographic exhibition by emerging artist Tommy Tetley

Shot over the past three years, Tommy’s work travels from Bristol’s energetic dancefloors to the misty canals of Bath and the diverse landscapes of South America. Developed through traditional darkroom techniques, each handmade silver gelatin print reveals intricate detail, striking contrasts, and moments of light that might otherwise go unnoticed.

The exhibition traces Tommy’s journey as a photographer, beginning within music communities where he first found direction, through his travels abroad, and finally arriving back in Bath, where fleeting weather conditions created a series of atmospheric final images.

Supporting student and emerging artists has always been part of The Island’s story. We are a place to test ideas, take creative risks, develop new work, and share it with the public. Whether it’s a first exhibition or the next step in an evolving practice, we’re proud to provide a space where creativity can grow.

Chuck Mambo is back with a 2 hour workshop designed for people interested in becoming professional wrestlers. If you've ever wanted to step into the ring this class is for you!

Taught by working professional wrestler Chuck Mambo you will cover Lock Ups and Technical Wrestling, Rolls and Break Falls, Strikes, Pins and Submissions, and Character Work.

This training covers wrestling fundamentals and will be done on mats not in a wrestling ring.

Come wearing comfortable clothing for sports but if you would like to bring a mask or a cape you feel free! And character ideas are WELCOME!
As it is on a sprung dance floor the training will be done with no shoes on. Please bring a drink as we will be getting ACTIVE!

The workshop is designed for people who have never wrestled before so it will be physical but also adaptable so that all levels of fitness and all shapes of body are welcome! The workshop will be a safe and inclusive space for everybody so please bring a good attitude! While it is designed for total newcomers, if you have been to the last workshop, you are very welcome along and we'll have some new stuff to try!

Chuck Mambo has wrestled for 12 years for companies including Riot Cabaret, Attack Pro Wrestling, Revolution Pro Wrestling, Progress Wrestling, German Wrestling Federation, Pro Wrestling Chaos, The Wrestling Revolver and TNA Wrestling. He is also the co-founder of Pro Wrestling Ceasefire.

Parallel is a photography exhibition by Abril Sigle exploring life inside St Catherine’s Place in Bristol, a site shaped by redevelopment, shifting uses, and changing ideas of home. Once a shopping centre, later combined with council housing, and now moving towards private flats, the building becomes a space where different lives, rhythms and transitions exist side by side.

Moving between documentary observation and personal reflection, the exhibition asks how we live through change while it is still unfolding.

The Island Gallery, First Floor, Bridewell Street, Bristol. BS1 2QD.

Launch Night Thursday 25th from 6pm - 10pm
