Doc Scott - Tokyo Dawn

A pretty rare find on vinyl. I was lucky to pick this up as part of a compilation that had been split up into separate 12”

The basics

* Style: Atmospheric jungle / intelligent D&B
* Original 12” mix: listed at 84 BPM by Beatport, which is almost certainly the half-time metadata convention — musically it’s around 168 BPM.

What makes it special

What’s interesting is that Doc Scott was better known for the much darker, tougher side of jungle. He was central to the Metalheadz sound, with tracks such as VIP Drumz, Drumz 95 and later Shadow Boxing.

Then he produced Tokyo Dawn for LTJ Bukem’s Good Looking Records, and it showed a very different side of him. Metalheadz themselves describe it as one of his “more mellow” productions.

But I wouldn’t simply call it “liquid D&B”. That’s too modern a description.

It’s proper 1996 jungle, with:

* crisp, chopped Amen-style breaks
* huge amounts of space
* warm pads and atmospheric textures
* a surprisingly deep low end
* relatively restrained percussion
* a sense of movement without the track becoming busy

There’s a fantastic tension between the beautiful, almost ambient atmosphere and those sharp, crunchy breaks.

What it sounds like

It’s deep, soulful and incredibly understated rather than a conventional big D&B anthem.

* Drums: A restrained, rolling breakbeat. The groove is there constantly, but the drums don’t dominate the track.
* Bass: Deep and rounded rather than aggressive. It gives the track that rolling physical movement without turning into a huge sub-bass showcase.
* Harmony: A warm, slightly melancholic minor-key progression. There’s a beautiful sense of space around the chords.
* Vocals: Tyler Daley’s soulful vocal is central to the track. DRS’s MC contribution feels conversational and reflective rather than hyping the dancefloor.

The Ladder by Rantoul.

Rantoul was part of that Good Looking Records / LTJ Bukem sound — melodic, spacious, soulful D&B rather than the harder, more aggressive jungle that was also emerging at the time.

The Ladder is particularly atmospheric, with a strong melodic quality and that characteristic floating, cinematic Good Looking sound. It appeared on Progression Sessions 4 alongside artists such as Big Bud, Seba, Moonchild, LTJ Bukem and Makoto.

There’s also an interesting bit of trivia: The Ladder samples the film Jacob’s Ladder, which is presumably where the title and some of its unsettling atmosphere come from. That was specifically noted by listeners discussing the track.
