I canāt believe weāre coming to the end of our first year at the tearoom. Where has that time gone?
I am so thankful for all the wonderful people I have had the privilege of meeting over the past year. From the special occasionsāboth happy and sadāthat we have catered for, to the customers I see every day, you have all become part of the tearoomās story.
You probably donāt realise how much our chats mean to me, or how much I appreciate hearing your comments about the tearoom. My dream has always been to create a place where people feel welcomeāa place that offers not just good food, but a social experience too.
In many ways, Iām glad that we often have little or no phone signal here, because it means the art of conversation is still very much alive. I love hearing people chatting, laughing and enjoying time together.
After all, the most precious gift we can give one another is our time.
I am also incredibly grateful for the amazing team who work alongside me and help make the tearoom the special place it is. I cannot thank them enough for their hard work, dedication and support.
Esther, Tracy, Lorraine, Karen, Jacob, Hattie, Theresa, Julie, Charlie and Hayley ā thank you for everything you do.
While this post is a celebration, I also want to be honest about the challenges facing small hospitality businesses. Despite working incredibly hard throughout our first year, the tearoom has made a loss.....
I always knew the first year would be challenging, but a major factor in our losses has been VAT.
As a hospitality business that makes everything from scratch, we buy raw ingredients that are zero-rated for VAT. Unlike many other businesses, we have very little VAT to reclaim against the VAT we must charge on our sales. As a result, every quarter we face VAT bills amounting to thousands of pounds.
At the same time, costs continue to riseātransport, heating, wages, oil, water and electricity all place increasing pressure on small businesses like ours. I truly believe that something needs to change. Hospitality businesses are under enormous pressure, and reducing VAT would make a real difference to helping businesses survive. There is growing momentum behind this campaign, and I would be so grateful if you would consider signing the petition in support of a VAT reduction for hospitality. https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/759116 -content
My hope is that the tearoom will still be here for many years to come. This is more than just a business to meāit is my home, and it is where I want to be, serving our community with homemade food.
Please continue to support us by visiting the tearoom. Every visit, every recommendation and every kind word helps more than you know.
Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your support throughout our first year. Iām looking forward to celebrating this milestone with my wonderful team and customers over the coming days.
With love and gratitude,
Julia xx
Reduce VAT on hospitality to 10% to prevent closures & protect tax revenue. When venues close, HMRC loses 100% of its VAT, business rates, PAYE & corporation tax, reducing employment & supply chains. We believe a lower VAT rate would keep viable businesses trading, securing jobs & ongoing revenue.
