Every venue has said “we’ll do our best to accommodate.” Almost none have a plan behind it.

Somewhere in your diary this season is a couple who haven’t told you yet that a guest has care needs.

They’ll tell you eventually. Late, and usually apologetically. Then comes the scramble — someone suggests a quiet room, someone checks the ramp, someone on the team is quietly asked to keep an eye out.

Here’s the thing. Your team are hospitality professionals. They’re not trained, insured or registered to help with mobility, personal care or medication. Asking them to improvise is unfair on them and unsafe for the guest.

Meanwhile the family spends the whole day on alert, and the guest spends it feeling like a problem being managed.

There are five questions your couples should be asking you. Most won’t. Car park to accessible toilet to seating plan to where the speeches sit — and the venues that can answer them in specifics are the ones that win the booking. Specifics tell a family you’ve done this before.

I’ve written the whole thing up, including what a good answer sounds like. And if you’d like our venue questionnaire sheet — a prompt to walk your own site and get your answers straight before anybody asks — just message me. No cost, no obligation.

Bank holiday Monday, and I’m still doing it. 🙃

Twelve years of nursing has permanently rewired something. I cannot walk into a room — any room, including my own family’s back garden — without spotting the step nobody mentioned, the gravel path, the chair with no arms, and the loo that’s up two stairs and round a corner.

It’s a curse at barbecues. It’s rather useful at weddings.

Anyone else physically incapable of entering a building without risk-assessing it? Tell me I’m not the only one 👇

Hope you’re all having a lovely one. 🤍

J married at Solberge Hall, and she has very kindly let me share what she wrote afterwards.

Her Nanna is ninety-two, with health needs and limited mobility, living in a nursing home an hour and a half from the venue. The family had already decided it wasn’t going to happen.

So here is what happened instead. I collected her. I drove her the ninety minutes. I stayed alongside her through the day, and I took her safely home after the meal. In between all of that, she was simply at her granddaughter’s wedding.

In Jenni-Mae’s words: the communication beforehand put the whole family at ease, and the day itself was a carefree one.

That is the bit worth sitting with. Not only that her Nanna was there — but that nobody spent the day watching the clock on her behalf.

If you are reading this and quietly assuming the same thing about someone you love, please just ask. The answer is far more often yes than families expect.

Thank you Jenni-Mae 🤍

📍 We’re coming to Manchester!

The Event Carer will be at The National Wedding Show, Manchester Central — Saturday 24 & Sunday 25 October, and we’d love you to come and say hello.

If you’re planning a wedding where a parent, grandparent or guest needs a little extra support to be there and truly enjoy it — mobility, sensory, cognitive, continence or general wellbeing — that’s exactly what we do. Discreet, professional, one-to-one companion care so nobody is watching the clock instead of the ceremony.

Not a clinical service. Think of us as their plus one for the day.

We handle the care. You handle the champagne. 🥂

Come and find us between the catwalk shows and the champagne bar — we’ll talk you through how it works, what’s included in our Bronze, Silver and Gold packages, and answer the questions you might not have thought to ask yet. No pressure, no hard sell, just a proper conversation about how to make your day work for everyone you love.

A Wonderful Yorkshire Wedding! 💚

Chelsea and Ben married at Oaklands on Friday, and some of this family had not been together in some years — but there they all were, in the same room, for the same happy reason.

And what a place to do it. Oaklands sits within two hundred acres of East Yorkshire woodland, with The Grand Lodge built from two hundred locally sourced trees, rustic at heart but quite lovely inside — soft lighting, deep jewel colours, greenery throughout. The Pavilion seats two hundred in the open air with the lake beyond.

I spent the day as caring companion to the groom’s father, and it was a joy from beginning to end. He was in the photographs with his sons, at the table with a drink in front of him, telling his stories. His son crouched beside him simply to hold his hand for a moment. And when the light turned golden, there he was outside with all of them gathered around him.

That is what a companion offers. Not someone hovering, but someone alongside you—so you can settle into the day and enjoy every part of it. You are in the celebration, rather than watching from the edge.

family and friends, who could celebrate the day together.

With warmest congratulations to Chelsea and Ben, it was a pleasure to be part of your special day. My thanks also to Oaklands wedding venue, for such a beautiful setting; I look forward to my next visit with you. 🥂
