I know the pictures look nice but I can’t help feeling a little underwhelmed by the Dahlias this year 😒

After starting to pop out in June (!!) they’ve taken ages to get going; many of the stems needing to be cut and thrown on the compost due to being thick and hollow and many plants hardly even going still; despite the fact we’re now in August. I probably put 50 dahlia plants in the Poly tunnel which are yet to really get going. Also the bugs this year (on all plants) have been ridiculous. Hardly seen a slug but have seen so many other tiny, nibbling, plant destroying bugs. Im@not sure which is worse. So I’m giving the organza bags a go (last vid)! So far so good. Now just need a few more flowers to show their faces !!

I also need a revamp of the dahlia bed. Will be digging up some and keeping them but otherwise I need some newbies.

TBH I’m thinking I won’t grow as many and will put more time and bed space into growing other useful things (Zinnias!)

Very much enjoyed creating these wedding designs last week. I’d put a lot of thought into them over the last couple of months as the theme was different to anything I’d done before. Colours were coffee, cream, dusky pinks and dried materials. I collected a lot of dried materials from hedgerows and for the dusky pink I went to somebody’s house,
knocked on the door and asked if I could cut 40 stems of their Sedum as it looked so beautiful in that lovely dusky shade and mine is still green topped.

I had to buy in quite a few of the flowers as I didn’t have enough here and my coffee roses are very short and struggling this year due to to the drought. But so be it. It came together and another really enjoyable experience for me !

Pics from the last few weeks… they may all look pretty and flourishing but the drought we are having here has been incredibly tough recently! Lots of my plants are too short stemmed to use, the dahlias are slow despite cutting a good few stems a few weeks ago, weeds are absolutely off the charts and seem to thrive (but also can’t pull them out because the ground too hard), anything not watered regularly is brown/sad or dying.

The poly tunnel has been what’s kept me going! For the first time I’m realising the what the fuss is all about over Zinnias! And .. Marigolds!! Fancy ones! I@started thinking about the growing season 2026 about 2 months ago and what I’ll do differently to improve this year. Im ready to get spring seeds!!

Up and coming flowers ! Zinnias on first vid… have never seen them look this healthy early on. The tunnel has made a huge difference. Stem length looks amazing too. Colour wise I’ve grown Lime green, Giant Wine, Purple and some Queen Mixed.
Dahlias … on their way! Along with sunflowers and marigolds. ☺️👍🏽

Spring 2025 beauty. Some pics of what we’ve grown this year for cut flowers. Been such a different year to 2024; the Poly tunnel has been amazing bringing early flowers and better control over what’s growing in it. The weather most of the time has been beautiful. Yes we’re having a drought and I’m spending every night/(my life) watering but if I had to choose the year it would definitely be this one!!!

Recent pictures of growth! Antirrhinum (Snap Dragons) have just started popping, Sweet Williams are showing the first few flowers, Greek cress is fabulous and I wish I’d grown more blue Delphiniums.

Been a busy time as always is this time of year - trying to sow the last of the seeds, small plants constantly being planted out also and roped my friend into helping me last weekend! ❤️🙏🏼

Recently met some lovely florists who have shown such an interest in what I’m growing and hope I can do lots of lovely buckets of British flowers for them :)

Let’s not mention weather.

These pictures capture our flowers growing but not quite in bloom. At this time of year as a flower grower; we are between the end of the tulips season and the next round of Ranunculus (and many other things) popping out!

In true farmer style I’ve been having a slight wobble about the lack of rain we’ve had and how it is affecting the growing season. But it’s out if our hands and simply a waiting game … !

Also the last of the seed sowing for late summer flowers is well underway as time is running out! 😵‍💫

On a positive note I’ve started to build relationships with local florists who are interested in buying my flowers ☺️❤️ which is just fabulous. 🤗

Been a busy week on the cutting patch. Getting lots of seeds planted, tidying up for a few folk from the village to come and see the flowers tomorrow and lots of watering. Plus making sure plants aren’t drying out in the heat!

A little summary of early Spring 2025 at Whitelands. I love Spring; and this one has been especially lovely weather wise. Still cold at night but warm and sunny a lot of the days :)

Captured in these pics are Anemones, (first time growing for us), Narcissi, Tulips and the early Ranunculus.

As always in this line of work I’ve learnt a huge amount from this year and am making lots of notes and plans for 2026 and how I’ll change a few weeks things for the better :)))
