The Barton Junior Gardeners really do have the greenest fingers in town. Their beds in Baysgarth Park are thriving — potatoes, spinach, broad beans, garlic and onions are all racing ahead, and the children couldn’t be prouder of what they’ve grown.

If you’d like to see their hard work for yourself, make it part of your Barton Open Gardens route this weekend. It’s a brilliant example of what young gardeners can achieve with enthusiasm, teamwork and a bit of sunshine.

And keep an eye out for next year — the plan is to add soft fruit beds, giving the Junior Gardeners even more to grow (and taste!).

Open Gardens runs Saturday & Sunday, 1pm to 5pm, with maps, costing £5, available from the Stables Café.

Last week’s sunshine gave the Friends of Barton Parks volunteers the perfect window to get stuck into the long border in Baysgarth Park. The team made brilliant progress — w**ds out, borders edged, and the whole bed looking much tidier.

Of course, this week’s rain will probably have encouraged every w**d in North Lincolnshire to shoot straight back up again… but that’s gardening for you. The volunteers will be back with gloves and good humour soon enough.

Huge thanks to everyone who came along — the park is looking better every week because of you.

🌼 We can’t wait to see what everyone creates on Thursday afternoon

Our Free Family Crafts session is nearly here, and the Barton Lions’ Beer Tent in Baysgarth Park is all set to become a hive of creativity. From seed bombs to sunflower planting, we’re looking forward to seeing what our young makers dream up.

A huge thank you to the people who make sessions like this possible:
• Barton Town Council for awarding a grant to cover the cost of the artists and materials
• Barton Lions for the generous use of their tent
• Mark Nettleton Landscaping for donating the seeds
• Deepdale Garden Centre for providing the compost

Just bring your imagination and drop in between 1pm and 3pm.

🌱 See you there for an afternoon of muddy hands and big smiles

Mike and Jeannie Corlyon, organisers of the Allotment Society annual potato growing competition for young people, donating seed potatoes to the Barton Young Gardeners, so they can take part this year.

14 groups are taking part this year, schools, nurseries, scouts and BYG. The competition is judged in three categories, heaviest individual potato, heaviest overall crop, and funniest shaped potato. The winners will be announced at Horticultural Show on 9 August.

🌿 A Reminder About the Accessible Swing 🌿

Over the weekend, the accessible swing — designed specifically for young people who cannot use the rest of the equipment — was damaged. Thankfully, the brilliant NLC maintenance team were able to fix it first thing on Monday morning. But it really shouldn’t have happened in the first place.

If you see older children or teenagers using that swing when they have no need for it, please encourage them to try the many other, far more robust swings and pieces of equipment available. The accessible swing is a lifeline for young people who don’t have the luxury of choosing from the rest of the playpark.

A little consideration goes a long way. And if it isn’t being taught in school, it certainly ought to be — especially when it comes to making sure every child in Barton can enjoy the park safely and with dignity.

🌱 Thank you for helping us protect the spaces that matter most.

🌿 A Little Weekend “Artwork” in the Park… 🎨

It seems our young artists have been out in force again. A fresh bit of graffiti was reported over the weekend, but thanks to the ever‑reliable NLC team, it was removed first thing Monday morning.

Now — if you do have a young person in your life who enjoys painting things, we have a far better canvas for them than park equipment. The toilet gates could really do with a sanding down and a fresh coat of paint, and that kind of creativity would be a very welcome contribution to the park.

Let’s channel that artistic energy into something the whole community can enjoy. If you know someone who’d like to help, send them our way.

🌱 Together we keep Barton’s green spaces looking brilliant.

A donation from Cllr Neil Jacques’s Mayor’s Charity Fund 2024/25 bought equipment for Barton Young Gardeners.

As Mayor in 2024/5, Cllr Neil Jacques raised over £3,500 for projects to encourage young people to get involved in the joys of gardening. To date four groups have been supported through this fund and there is still enough to make further grants.

Barton Young Gardeners were the latest recipients, and they used the grant to buy much needed equipment.

🌳 Two Weeks of Non‑Stop Fun at Baysgarth Play Park! 🎉

It’s now been two weeks since the newly refurbished Baysgarth Play Park opened — and what a fantastic fortnight it’s been. From dawn to dusk, every single day, the park has been buzzing with families, laughter, and some very enthusiastic grown‑ups too.

We couldn’t resist sharing this brilliant photo of Cllr Christine Patterson at the official opening. She absolutely couldn’t help herself and took a turn on the big slide — much to the delight of her watching great‑grandson, who thought it was the best thing ever.

Moments like this are exactly what the playpark is all about: joy, connection, and a space where every generation can join in.

Here’s to many more weeks of happy play in Barton 🌟
