HHV Records review of our latest KW064 from Myk Derill:

English
Released on Knotweed, the "Refraction" 12" by Myk Derill continues the long-standing collaboration between the artist and the label—marking the imprint’s 15th anniversary—while exploring various nuances of a bass-heavy dub-techno aesthetic. The record features three distinct tracks—including "Optical Density" and "Trigo"—alongside the title track, "Refraction," presented in both its original and a dub version. Throughout, the arrangements rely consistently on deep sub-bass and expansive delay and reverb elements.

Musically, "Refraction" navigates the space between minimal, driving grooves and sweeping, dub-inflected textures; precisely placed percussion and sparse melodic fragments create room for modular sound development. The dub version of "Refraction" shifts the focus further toward spatial effects and low-end expansion, while the other tracks offer more compact structures well-suited for DJ sets. With this release, Knotweed and Myk Derill highlight both the club-oriented side of their work and the experimental, dub-infused depth that has come to define the label over the years. For DJs and enthusiasts of a deep, minimalist sonic aesthetic, the "Refraction" 12" provides both potent tools and atmospheric soundscapes.
