Wedding for Mark and Josephine at the First Landing Beach Resort in Vuda, Fiji last week.
First Landing is an historical site where the first people to arrive in Fiji landed. The wedding was done on a man made island shaped as a foot symbolising their first landing in Fiji.
The couple travelled to Fiji on a cruise ship and berthed at Lautoka.
There were no other relative but only the two of them.

There was a wedding for a couple at one of the favourite resorts in the Mamanuca group last week. Before the wedding, I asked the couple who there witnesses are. They decided to have their mothers as witnesses. The groom gave her mothers name exactly as written on his birth certificate.
The ceremony proceeded until it was time for the signing of the marriage certificate. The bride signs, followed by the groom and the brides mum last to sign was the grooms mum. She then told me that it is illegal for her to use the name. She crossed the surname and wrote her new surname. She told me to sort it signed and left to join the wedding group. It started to rain and to me the ending was not like the other weddings. I felt like making a big mistake in front of the people.
I then ran to the restaurant to evade being soaked. I started to scroll up and down to find a solution as the mums name was given by the groom. Given that the groom's mum did not want to sign with that name I concluded that the grooms mum must have been married again. The second question that crops up is why did the groom gave his father's surname and not the new husbands surname. I then assumed that mums getting married again is still not not accepted by the boy. I then decided to rewrite a new certificate using mums new surname.
After writing I went to the grooms mum and told her that new wedding certificate is ready with her new surname. She has to talk it over with his son. By now the wedding group were in joyous mood drinking and dancing, after a few minutes the groom and his mother came to me. The groom hold the pen sign and dashed again to join his wife for the photo. The mum signed and I made my apology as the son gave me the name. Mum then told me that the grooms dad passed away and she has remarried. That was the reason for the change. She also told me that her son apologised to her as he was still excited with the ceremony when he was asked about the witness and their names.
Last to sign was the bride after the brides mum.

Important Information Regarding Fiji Government Marriage Requirements
• Filling of Special License Application form.
• Birth Certificate of both parties
• Passport size photo of both parties
• Photocopy of Identification (ID) Cards . [Passport- first page with name and photo] of both parties
• If previously married, a decree Nisi or death certificate
• Single status from country of origin if intending to marry a local resident
• Photocopy of Passport (first page with name and photo) if other IDs is used.

These guidelines are set by the Fijian Government. We strongly recommend that couples double-check all requirements before traveling, and tour operators also verify requirements for their clients. The Fiji Visitors Bureau should also be used as a point of reference for pre-wedding requirements. Fiji Wedding Services is not liable for any incorrect information in relation to proposed marriages in Fiji.
Marriage under Fijian law involves two parts:
a) The Registration: The registration of the intent to marry with the Registry Office in Suva, Fiji. The office is open from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday and the meeting will take around 20 minutes. • Superior Wedding Services (Fiji) will arrange an appointment for the completion of the Fijian registry requirements and thereafter the marriage service. It is important to note that the bride and groom will need certified copy of their respective birth certificates, their passports, a Statutory Declaration (Single status) certificate and if previously married, a copy of the divorce papers or death certificate.

b) The Ceremony: A civil or religious ceremony can be held in a village, tropical forest in the Bure ni Reki or a sandy beach.
Superior Wedding Services (Fiji) trading as wedding.fiji will be responsible for the following after the marriage:
a) Tapa framed Marriage Certificate issued by the Registrar General.
b) Apostil stamp on the Marriage Certificate for international recognition issued by Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
