Malaya is a collective effort of all Filipino Professionals and students led by Sarah Jane Mabilangan lead choreographer for Cultural, Jewel Payawal & Richelle Mae Aliligay-Villanueva, the group started as small group performing in different Filipino organizations events. Malaya was established 2024 The group was now known as The Malaya Dance Company & Events ( MDCE) and received recognition from both Filipino communities and International audience.

Malaya dance group showcases the rich traditions and diverse heritage of the Philippines in Finland through music, movement, and colorful costumes. Malaya's performances reflect different influences—indigenous, Spanish, and Muslim—seen in dances like Tinikling, Cariñosa, and Singkil.

Wearing traditional attire such as the baro’t saya or malong, members express Filipino values of unity, joy, and pride. Our mission is to help preserve the nation’s culture and share its beauty with audiences both locally and around the world.

EUROPINOY CULTURE | Maglalatik: The Rhythm of Filipino Heritage

🇫🇮 HELSINKI, FINLAND — The powerful rhythms of the Maglalatik echoed through The Philippines' Day 2026 celebration in Helsinki as Filipino performers showcased one of the Philippines' most iconic and energetic folk dances.

Originating from the province of Laguna, Maglalatik is a traditional Philippine folk dance performed with coconut shell halves attached to the dancers' bodies and hands, creating lively percussion through synchronized movements and striking rhythms. Originally depicting a mock battle over coconut meat ("latik"), the dance has evolved into a vibrant cultural performance that celebrates strength, teamwork, discipline, and Filipino resilience.

Fun Fact: The name "Maglalatik" comes from "latik," the rich coconut residue produced during coconut milk processing. Today, the dance is one of the most recognized Philippine folk dances and is often performed during festivals, cultural showcases, and national celebrations around the world.

Through EuroPinoy Culture, we celebrate the traditions that continue to preserve Filipino heritage and unite communities across generations and across Europe. 🇵🇭🌍
