Ray of Light Awards (ROLA) is an international film, tv and web festival honouring global creators for brave content made to expand our understanding of human potential.

Some films remind us that our relationship with the Earth is also a relationship with one another.

SILA received the Gaia Award at ROLA 2026, celebrating work that honours the creative feminine, reveres Mother Earth and explores a more connected way of living.

In this moment from the film, Rakel Aviaja Sanimuinaq reflects on Inua, the spirit or life force that exists within all things, and an understanding of nature rooted not in separation, but relationship.

As we look towards ROLA 2027, we are searching for the next films and filmmakers whose stories have the power to open conversations, shift perspectives and stay with us long after the screen goes dark.

What should a story leave behind?

For Academy Award-nominated producer Scott Franklin, whose work includes Black Swan, The Wrestler, Requiem for a Dream, mother! and Jackie, it is the feeling that something has been experienced together.

A room of people laughing, crying, dancing, holding hands. Strangers brought into the same story and, for a moment, feeling connected by it.

Speaking with us at ROLA 2026, Scott reflected on the power of film to create those shared experiences, and why he wants people to leave his work feeling empowered and united.

Because sometimes the most powerful thing a story can do is remind us that we are not experiencing the world alone.

What would change if we knew we were coming back?

Speaking with us at ROLA 2026, Ilona Selke poses a simple question with enormous implications. If we knew we would return to this world, how differently might we treat one another? How differently might we care for the planet we would one day inherit again?

Whether understood through reincarnation, spirituality or simply the idea of legacy, it asks us to think beyond the span of our own lifetime and consider what we are leaving behind.

“If you knew you’d come back, would you want to leave a good legacy?”

ROLA was never created to fit neatly into the traditional film festival model.

For founder Elisabetta ‘Betta’ Caraccia, protecting that independence is fundamental to what ROLA can become. It allows the festival to make decisions differently, to remain open to the unexpected, and to bring together stories and voices because they matter, rather than because they fit an established mould.

That same discernment shapes the films we are looking for.

As submissions open for ROLA 2027, we are searching for filmmakers who have something meaningful to say. Stories that shift perspective, ask difficult questions, open conversations or leave something behind long after the screen goes dark.

From our opening at La Curandera and screenings at La Nave, to Gaia Day at Juntos Farm, Youth & Next Gen in Plaza del Parque and our final nights beneath the walls of Dalt Vila, the 2026 festival took us all over the island.

There are partnerships that support a festival, and others that become part of the experience itself. For ROLA 2026, Alma Digital transformed the stage at Dalt Vila through sound, light and generative visuals, creating a constantly evolving backdrop for the artists performing within one of Ibiza’s most extraordinary settings.

Their work sits at the intersection of art, technology and human experience, using digital tools not simply for spectacle, but to create something immersive, responsive and alive.

It was a beautiful meeting of disciplines, and exactly the kind of creative collaboration we love to see at ROLA.

A special night in Venice. ✨

ROLA founder Elisabetta Caraccia joined Irena Isabella Kleut on the red carpet at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival for the premiere of Place to Be, the new film by acclaimed director Kornél Mundruczó.

Irena has been part of ROLA from the very beginning, as a judge, supporter and much-loved part of our community, making this a particularly special moment to share.

“So grateful to Isabella for inviting me to share this beautiful moment with her and to experience Place to Be in Venice. I’m so proud of her and of everyone behind this beautiful film, one that made us laugh, think and fly.

Seeing Ellen Burstyn shining on screen and on stage at 93 was deeply inspiring, especially just days after she was honoured by the Venice International Film Festival with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, celebrating her extraordinary contribution to cinema. Her vitality filled the room and reinforced the hope that we can embrace every stage of life, continuing to create, contribute and bring something meaningful to the world throughout our journey.

At ROLA 2026, Co-Managing Director of Boom Festival, Artur Mendes, reflected on what festivals can become when they are created with intention.

Artur has spent more than two decades exploring how temporary gatherings can create space for something much bigger: connection, celebration, learning and new ways of being together.

“We can create a new human culture through celebration and festival culture.”

For Artur, that potential comes with responsibility. Festivals can be places where we experiment with how we live, how we relate to one another and the kind of culture we want to carry back into the world beyond them.

Music has always been more than sound for Alex Serra. It is a way of connecting.

Speaking with us at ROLA 2026, Alex reflected on the journey from busking on the streets of Barcelona to creating music with communities around the world, and on what those experiences taught him about listening, belonging and making space for something to happen collectively.

For Alex, the most powerful moments are not necessarily the biggest ones. They happen when the separation between artist and audience begins to disappear and everyone becomes part of the same experience.

“Music is not something that I do. It’s something that happens through me.”
