This week I was scared⦠but I got on stage and showed people something that barely exists yet. I performed 20 minutes of my brand-new spy-themed magic show at .feltenās cabaret at the green room, and oh wow, I was terrified.
Hereās what Iāve learned building a new show: itās SO much easier to hide behind the polished āperformer voiceā with the big smile, the showmanship, the easy jokes like ādrinking makes the magic better.ā The second Iām in front of an audience, thatās where my brain runs. Safe. Familiar. Guaranteed applause. Itās like when I was younger and defaulted to princess mode with a high pitched voice. I grew out of that⦠and landed in ācorporate magicianā mode. In control, knows how to work a room, dry comedyā¦but a generic, commercially safe version of me with nothing in particular to say.
And thatās not the show Iām trying to make.
Iāve spent months treating this like a theater piece: a real script, an actual character, only routines that serve the story. I want it to mean something aghhh⦠not just impress people or get laughs (though those are nice too!).
So when I slipped back into āperformer modeā instead of staying in character⦠I felt regret after. The 20 went smoothly, it was cohesive, I got laughs, and Iām proud of that. But I wasnāt fully in the character, and I wasnāt off-book yet (memorization 1ā10? A solid 3 š
). So a lot of those specific spy details Iād spent hours writing came out as hesitant word salad.
And thatās okay. This show isnāt even on its legs yet. Itās a newborn lil baby. It canāt be good until it first gets to exist ā¦which means getting up there scared, again and again, until it grows into itself. A good start on a loooong journey. ā¤ļø
Huge gratitude to Matt for building a space where performers get to try, fumble, and grow.
