Magical Katrina

This week I was scared… but I got on stage and showed people something that barely exists yet. I performed 20 minutes of my brand-new spy-themed magic show at .felten’s cabaret at the green room, and oh wow, I was terrified.

Here’s what I’ve learned building a new show: it’s SO much easier to hide behind the polished “performer voice” with the big smile, the showmanship, the easy jokes like “drinking makes the magic better.” The second I’m in front of an audience, that’s where my brain runs. Safe. Familiar. Guaranteed applause. It’s like when I was younger and defaulted to princess mode with a high pitched voice. I grew out of that… and landed in “corporate magician” mode. In control, knows how to work a room, dry comedy…but a generic, commercially safe version of me with nothing in particular to say.

And that’s not the show I’m trying to make.

I’ve spent months treating this like a theater piece: a real script, an actual character, only routines that serve the story. I want it to mean something aghhh… not just impress people or get laughs (though those are nice too!).

So when I slipped back into “performer mode” instead of staying in character… I felt regret after. The 20 went smoothly, it was cohesive, I got laughs, and I’m proud of that. But I wasn’t fully in the character, and I wasn’t off-book yet (memorization 1–10? A solid 3 😅). So a lot of those specific spy details I’d spent hours writing came out as hesitant word salad.

And that’s okay. This show isn’t even on its legs yet. It’s a newborn lil baby. It can’t be good until it first gets to exist …which means getting up there scared, again and again, until it grows into itself. A good start on a loooong journey. ❤️

Please support my friend Dustin Knouse, he's a magician and a very kind, hard working, awesome person. He just found out his wife Sarah has cancer. Please support them if you can. He's a really good human being and a massive asset to the magic community, and this is a really scary and uncertain time for his family so they need all the help they can get.
