🗣️ Is "expat" just a privileged word for "immigrant"?
That debate misses what actually matters. There is a fundamental difference between retiring on a U.S. pension and needing local employment. But the real trap for retirees isn't the label—it's assuming financial security gives you instant situational awareness.
When foreign residents act like know-it-alls, competent locals disengage, leaving only opportunists in the room.
If we want to build real integration in Ecuador:
- Stop acting like passive "guests" and take ownership of your space as an immigrant.
- Delegate better—pay above-average rates to local professionals so they can build expanding businesses or put their kids through school.
- Promote active standards: don't passively accept inefficiency just because "it's an Ecuadorian doing it." Push for timeliness, cleanliness, and real accountability.
