I met Chiche for this photo shoot in his studio in Haría on the Canary Island of Lanzarote. It was fascinating to learn how he collects the clay for his traditional ceramics directly from the land nearby and throws his bowls and vases in a way that the Lanzaroteños have used for centuries. Water, the element from which all life on earth originates, is an endless inspiration for me. Shooting portraits in the ocean transforms us as modern humans and brings us back to our roots, interrupting our struggle to control and perfect everything. We just get into the flow of life. That is so liberating. And it allows so much beauty to simply emerge.
