The Lion, the Sheep, and the Tortoise

Long ago, in a peaceful forest, there lived a mighty lion who ruled over all the animals. The lion was feared because of his strength, but he was also proud and believed no one could ever outsmart him.

One day, the lion became very hungry. As he wandered through the forest, he saw a gentle sheep grazing in a green field.

“Today,” the lion roared, “you will be my meal.”

The frightened sheep bowed respectfully and said, “Your Majesty, I cannot stop you. But before you eat me, may I ask one favor? Allow me to say goodbye to my friend, the tortoise.”

The lion laughed. “A slow tortoise? Very well. Go quickly, but if you do not return, I will hunt down every sheep in this forest.”

The sheep hurried away and found the wise old tortoise resting beneath a tree. After hearing what had happened, the tortoise smiled.

“Do not be afraid,” he said. “Leave this to me.”

The tortoise slowly made his way to the lion.

The lion growled impatiently. “Where is the sheep?”

The tortoise replied, “Your Majesty, before you eat my friend, I think you should know that another lion has entered your kingdom. He claims to be stronger than you.”

The lion’s eyes burned with anger.

“Take me to this lion at once!”

The tortoise led him to an old well filled with clear water.

“He is hiding down there,” the tortoise whispered.

The lion looked into the well and saw his own reflection. Believing it was another lion staring back at him, he roared loudly. The reflection roared back. Furious, the lion leaped into the well to attack his rival.

Splash!

The lion could not escape.

The sheep and the other animals rejoiced, knowing they were safe.

The tortoise looked at the sheep and said, “Strength is powerful, but wisdom is greater. A calm mind can overcome even the strongest enemy.”

Moral of the story: Wisdom is greater than strength, and pride often leads to one’s downfall.

The Real Crisis Is Bad Leadership, Not Migration

The people crossing from Morocco to Spain are not the real problem. The deeper problem is poor leadership, corruption, insecurity, unemployment, and lack of opportunities in many African countries.

If African governments created jobs, fought corruption, improved security, and invested in education and healthcare, many young people would choose to build their future at home instead of risking their lives crossing deserts and the Mediterranean Sea.

Europe is no longer the “promised land” that many people imagine. Life in Europe also comes with high living costs, strict immigration laws, hard work, and many challenges. Migration alone is not the solution to Africa’s problems.

African leaders have a responsibility to create conditions where young people can dream, work, and succeed in their own countries. At the same time, countries around the world can continue supporting good governance, transparency, economic development, and cooperation with African nations.

The hope for Africa is not only in leaving Africa—it is also in building stronger institutions, creating opportunities, and promoting accountable leadership so that future generations can thrive at home.
