12th SIDO 2026 Final Reminders

Before the tournament starts this weekend, please take note of the following announcements:

1. All private URLs of SIDO 2026 had been sent to debaters and judges who have submitted the Personal Information Form. Links to the Debaters’ Briefing and the Organising Committee’s Briefing have both been sent in the same email. These briefings carry very important tournament information, kindly read them before you join our event.

If you haven’t received your private URLs, ask your Contact Person to message the Convener Daisy Yan Sun or send us an email to: [email protected].

2. Join the SIDO WeChat Group as soon as possible (“12th SIDO26 debs and Obs Group”) as instructed in the Organising Committee’s Briefing. The WeChat Group is the only platform for swift communication during and between rounds. The Discord platform will release important tournament information and announcements, which requires less time-urgency.

3. If you’re a Chinese national, remember to bring your physical ID card as you will need to swipe it for campus entry. If you’re a foreign national with your passports or Chinese compatriots with Home Return Permits, remember to bring either an E-print or paper-print of the personal information page of your document (full name, passport number, etc.). Our Volunteers stationed at gates will check the debaters’ records (number of your travelling document) and assist you with campus entry.

We are less than a month away from the start of the 12th Shanghai International Debate Open, and we are ecstatic to share some updates regarding the tournament.

1. We are ecstatic to share that we have met the tournament cap! With 200 confirmed teams from around the world, this year’s SIDO promises to be both highly competitive and richly diverse. We are delighted to share four of our international teams challenging for the championship at the tournament:

Hello Everyone,

Greetings from Shanghai! We are grateful for everyone’s enthusiasm for the 12th SIDO. Due to a very high number of team registrations, we have made the decision to extend the team cap to 200 teams to accommodate as many teams as we can. The slots are filling out very quickly so please do sign up as soon as possible if you are interested!

12th Shanghai International Debate Open 2026

Hello Everyone,

Greetings from Shanghai! We are very happy to announce the opening of Team Registration and IA application for the 12th SIDO to be held in-person from March 20th to 22nd 2026!

SUFE has sponsored 150,000RMB to the 12th SIDO 2026, primarily to subsidize the registration fee for university debaters, and to sustain a high-quality judging pool, which comprises breaking adjudicators and top debaters from international majors including, but not limited to, World University Debating Championship, World School Debating Championship, European University Debating Championship, United Asian Debating Championship, Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championship, Asian BP Debating Championship, and Northeast Asian Debating Championship.

Announcements on the Tournament Information, Team Registration and IA Application:

6) Competition Categories:
Any two persons can form a team. Team slots are NOT allocated on an institutional basis. NO team judge is required (Team Judge Policy: N=0).

You can register in either of the two Debate Categories:
a) School Category (中学组). If both debaters are full-time school students (中学生), they are eligible for the School Category. We will announce later the School Breaking Categories based on the number of teams registered in different age categories.
b) Open Category (公开组). Both debaters are university students or adults. Or One debater is a school student (中学生), and the second debate is a university student or adult. We will announce later the size of Breaking Teams based on the number of teams registered in the Open Category.

7) Registration Fee:
a) Open Team Registration Fee (公开组):
For All Open Teams: 700RMB per Debater (Total: 1400RMB or 200USD per team)
b) School Team Registration Fee (中学组)：
For All School Teams: 1250RMB per Debater (Total: 2500RMB or 350USD per team).

SUFE has allocated sponsorship funding to subsize debaters of the university category. So the registration fee for the Open Category teams is at a heavy discount. Payment information will be sent to the Contact Person and the registration email after we have received your team registration. Your team registration will only be completed after we have confirmed the receipt of your registration fee payment.

The registration fee does not cover your accommodation or your travel expenses. The registration fee supports 6 Preliminary Rounds, Octo/Quarter to Grand Finals, USD1000 Prize Money for the Open Champions, and covers your lunch and snacks/drinks during the 3-Day tournament. The registration fee also takes care of e-certificates, trophies, and tournament souvenirs, and the huge cost of flying in, housing, and providing meals/ SIM cards and Thank You Dinner for the volunteer-Independent Adjudicators/Tab Directors/Invited Debaters/Org Com members.

Our event is non-profit and no one is paid. It is substantially sponsored by the Shanghai University of Finance & Economics as well as generous sponsors annually to supplement the expenses of the event.

8 Tournament Hotel Accommodation: Arula Plaza Shanghai Hotel

The designated Tournament Hotel is Arula Plaza Shanghai Hotel 上海檀程大酒店 (Hotel Address: Nos.188 Wudong Road, Yangpu District, Shanghai, China 上海市杨浦区武东路188号, Telephone Nos: (8621) 5557 9999). The hotel is available on Ctrip.com for booking reservations.

Once your team slot(s) are confirmed by us by email, we will provide full information for you to make bookings on your own through the hotel’s online booking system.

We strongly recommend you stay at our Tournament Hotel as it is only a short 3-minute walk from the hotel to the Assembly Auditorium at the Wuchuan Campus of the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. There is a small university gate at Nos. 288 Wudong Road（武东路288号）near the Assembly Auditorium.
