this was Florence Pearl Reeves, my Nana. although she detested her names, I share them selfishly because to me, they were beautiful, just like she was. my two little nieces carry her names on now.

she was raised on a farm in Weston, Ontario and grew up in a family of established flower growers and gardeners (six plus generations of growers, according to my research). in the first photo you can see her standing in one of the family greenhouses amongst the chrysanthemums; an underrated flower in her opinion, and one that her uncle specialized in growing. she even carried them in her wedding bouquet.

while her brothers went on to run successful garden centres, Reeves & Plantworld, my Nana began her own journey. she found a soulmate in my Papa, Kenneth Charles Reeves, and married him at Christ Church in Woodbridge. he was an engineer for Gulf Canada, and my Nana held down the fort at home. together, they adopted and raised four children. my Papa’s work took them from Moosejaw to Montreal and then eventually they settled at their house on Cliff Road in the Cawthra Park area.

where my Nana and Papa often met in the middle was in their garden. equipped with only the best tools from Lee Valley, they’d head to the garden centres and select all their season staples. their front porch was always framed with two hanging baskets of fuchsias. peonies and lily of the valley bloomed along the walkway to the backyard. my Nana was a lover of line flowers like snapdragons and gladiolus, and made sure her snaps grew alongside her kitchen window so that she could always see them. my Papa, in true engineer form, had a perfectly manicured, circular garden patch on their front lawn that he would meticulously select tulip bulbs for each year. we’d giggle when he’d announce β€œall yellow tulips this spring” and by late April to early May, a sea of yellow tulips would bloom with one lone, obnoxious red β€œsurprise” tulip that would rise up in the middle of his perfect patch. this happened without fail almost every year and we’d hear him curse the squirrels or blame it on mislabeled bulbs.
