Reason #437 that stories are everything…
Not only can a story instantly connect you to a memory of a specific time and place, maybe a physical sensation or an emotion, or even a specific smell, but it can also be a way to connect someone else to their very own experience. The magic is in the sharing…
so I’m going to tell you a story about this little frog, who hangs proudly on our tree, having weathered many many adventures over the years.
This frog was one of the very first ornaments I bought for myself the first time I ever brought home my own tree in my own place. He has been rescued from overzealous new years revellers, a dog, a heated game of pictionary, what we believe were most probably ghost cats, the curious and grabbing hands of a toddler and many rounds of indoor sockminton (think badminton with paddles and sock potatoes).
When his leg was discovered one year mysteriously unattached to his body, I actually cried. And then an amazing thing happened, as I watched my 5 year old make him a little cast and literally made everything I believed true — that you can pass on this kind of beauty and empathy and caretaking of special things.
All of these moments that come flooding back every year when we hang him on the tree tell the story of our lives together.
I believe that our stories can connect us all in ways we have yet to imagine.
So, who wants to tell the next one?
