On Saturday, February 21, more than 400 guests gathered at the The Ritz-Carlton, Toronto for the Onyx Initiative’s Third Annual Celebration Gala.

The night honoured the talent, ambition and achievements of the Onyx Scholars, while recognizing the support of partners, mentors, advisory board members and the many allies who have been part of the journey.

From a powerful keynote by to electrifying musical performances, heartfelt reflections and a high-energy live auction, the evening was a true celebration of excellence.

Dear Friends and Family,

As I celebrate a milestone birthday on December 28th, I’ve been reflecting on the profound joy, compassion, and wisdom that Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu brought into the world—and into my own life. This year feels especially meaningful, as my birthday comes just after the anniversary of his passing on December 26, 2021.

To mark this occasion, I invite you to join me in supporting the Archbishop Desmond Tutu Bursary, which I established at the University of Toronto. Held in perpetuity, this bursary has awarded a scholarship to a deserving student every year—supporting Master of Divinity students at Trinity College who demonstrate financial need and a commitment to the values Archbishop Tutu championed: humanitarianism, truth and reconciliation, and climate action.

Archbishop Tutu was a global beacon of justice, hope, and moral courage. His belief in our capacity to rise above division continues to inspire, and this bursary helps future leaders carry that spirit forward.

Every donation is matched by the University of Toronto, doubling its impact and strengthening our ability to support students who embody these principles.

As the event planner for the University of the West Indies Toronto Benefit Awards Gala, I am truly honoured to help bring this extraordinary evening to life. Every year, this gala shines a light on individuals whose achievements, service, and leadership uplift our communities and inspire future generations.

What makes this night even more meaningful is its purpose: the funds raised directly support scholarships for deserving students, opening doors to education, advancement, and the chance to change their lives — and their communities — for the better.
