Iâve never had someone love me as much as you did. You were no ordinary grandparent, raising me and Lindsay as your own, our third parent, never growing tired of me hanging around at every opportunity.
When I was home from school, weâd watch Price is Right and General Hospital. On weekend weâd watch Nash Bridges and Chuck Norris. Sunday afternoon weâd watch âuncleâ Tiger. Youâd be cooking and doing a hundred things around the house and yet still join me, sitting in your chair at just the right time to see him come from behind and win again.
Weâd make our own DIY Nike merch, shopping for fabric together, making patterns, and stitching DIY swooshes onto home made skullcaps for me to wear under my football helmet to stay warm on cold October game days.
Youâd bring me along on all-day errands, going shopping or to ville st Laurent to check your condo, or to the bank to âsee your friends.â
You were always chatting with and making jokes to anyone who would listen, whether they were a bank teller, a cashier, or an expat British locksmith. Youâd invite him over for tea and black cake. Your joy for life was contagious, leaving a lasting impression on everyone you met. Until retirement, those bank tellers would ask me how youâre doing.
When I brought friends over, Iâd never have to call and ask, I knew, you would welcome them with open arms regardless of what time or how many.
At the time I didnât understand how rare that open door policy was.
You taught me so much of what I know and understand about kindness, hosting, friendship, hard work, resourcefulness, curiosity and self confidence.
You are the strongest and more resilient person Iâve met, never letting âno man play the fool [with you].â
Thereâs not enough characters in this note to capture the impact youâve had and continue to have in my life.
Love you always.
