It’s Not My Job to Capture Your Memories
I was listening to a podcast recently and something they said really stuck with me. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since.
As photographers, we always say it’s our job to capture and preserve your memories, but that’s not completely true.
Yes, it’s your wedding and your moments, but we’re not seeing them through your eyes. We’re capturing them through ours.
A good photographer captures moments, but a great one approaches the day from a different lens (and I don’t mean gear). Shooting weddings for years has taught me to slow down and really observe.
You might think that after so many weddings, it all starts to feel the same. But for me, it’s the opposite. I used to get anxious before weddings, worried about every technical detail, wanting everything perfect. Over time I realized that doing my best work wasn’t about obsessing over the photos, it was about focusing on the moments. When I’m present, the photos happen naturally.
Getting to know my couples, understanding what matters to them, and feeling connected to their families allows me to see the day from a place of gratitude and love.
That’s the perspective I bring when I photograph a wedding, my perspective. And it’s such a gift to share that back with my couples:
their day, seen through my eyes.
That’s why I love what I do.
