After 20 years behind the decks, these are the lessons I wish someone had told me sooner:

1. Your taste matters more than your gear.

You don’t need the newest controller, the biggest library, or the perfect setup. Develop your ear, dig for music, and learn what makes you excited to play.

2. Stop trying to play what you think people expect.

Read the room, absolutely. But don’t lose your identity trying to please everyone. The best sets happen when you find the balance between giving people what they want and showing them something they didn’t know they wanted.

3. Your network is part of your career.

Great music gets you noticed. Relationships get you invited back. Be good to promoters, other DJs, venues and the people around you. You never know where the next opportunity will come from.

4. Consistency beats talent that stays hidden.

Keep playing. Keep digging. Keep posting. Keep reaching out. Keep improving. You don’t need one huge break—you need to keep putting yourself in a position for opportunities to happen.

20 years in, I’m still learning. And honestly, that might be the best part. 🎧
