Gender Tides

Gender Tides Gender Tides is a collective on the island of Gabriola, BC, Canada. We advocate for diversity, understanding, and community support.

We came together in response to specific persecution, especially towards trans kids, across multiple provinces. Gender Tides is a collective of Gabriolans who are dedicated to celebrating transgender people, and raising awareness of discrimination faced by transgender people worldwide, as well as celebrating their contributions to society. The name of our group is a nod to the ocean and the ever-e

volving nature of gender. As we live on an island, and are surrounded by water. It reminds us that gender expression and identity can be fluid. Gender Tides Gabriola respectfully acknowledges the land on which we live and create is the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation whose presence here reaches back to time immemorial. We endeavour to honour Coast Salish land and its treaties by strengthening our relationship and responsibilities to them. We are grateful to Snuneymuxw First Nation, who continue to share their knowledge about the history of the lands and water and their relations to them. We believe education and strengthening communities contributes to the healing and decolonizing journey we all share together. πŸ¦…

Transgender Day of Visibility, is approaching quickly, and it is a very special and powerful day for people to come together and show their support so that Gabriola Island feels safe and welcoming for everyone.

Right now many trans and non-binary people (especially youth) are facing Canadian policies, legislation, and public debate that question their identities and dignity. In times like this, community matters more than ever.

Trans Day of Visibility isn’t just a celebration...it’s also a reminder that community means standing together. Showing up is a simple but powerful way to say: you belong here and you are valued.
Please consider coming out on March 31 to the Gabriola Theatre Centre, to stand with our trans/ non-binary community and celebrate the courage, resilience, and contributions of trans/non binary people everywhere.

Come celebrate a fun afternoon meant for the whole community, with music, stories, art, and comedy.
Because when a room fills with people who care, the message becomes louder than fear and politics. Your support as a community at this time is invaluable.

This event is for everyone!
Come out and show some community love and support and celebrate with us.

Showing up is a powerful gift the community can give right now, to some pretty great people we share this rock with.

What a fantastic Trans Day of Visibility 2025!

Thank you to the Gabriola Theatre Center for donating their space for us to have a wonderful evening of story telling, music, and art.

Thank you to Dinah Dee and Trevor for running the popcorn 🍿 machine AND donating their proceeds to the Gender Tides Collective!

We were lucky enough to have Lisa Marie Barron, Member of Parliament, Nanaimo-Ladysmith come and open the event with some words of support. How fantastic for us to have a q***r woman in our local parliament. 🌈

All the performers donated their time and energy to entertain us, and educate us. You were all incredible ❀️ 🀩

And finally, a massive thank you to everyone who came to enjoy the evening and support the event.

Hello world! We are Gender Tides. πŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈπŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

We are a local collective on Gabriola who came together in Feb 2025 in response to anti-trans rhetoric. All of us are either trans, gender diverse, or love someone who is. πŸ’“

Our first event, Illuminating Identities was a major success. We sold out the Gabriola Theater Center πŸŽ‰

Thank you to everyone who came out to have meaningful conversations, and learn a little about gender diversity.

We hope to continue with this momentum.
