AHS reports there are thousands of home kitchen operators in Edmonton alone and AHS has only 10 full time and 4 causal inspectors for the whole province. They accept they have no hope of even investigating all these violations. These same inspectors also inspect ALL the restraunts, food factories, and grocery stores in ALL Alberta. They report they ONLY act against a home kitchen IF someone rats out on a home kitchen. Their words not ours. The rat mist filr a complain online portal. AHS is then obligated to investigate.
That rat is Nawaz Karachi Biryani for reporting YEG BIihari YEG Bihari Kabab to AHS.
This has forced us to stop operating.
While we could opt for an inspection, three things, would never pass inspection.
1 A seperate kitchen for the business.
2 Open air grills.
3 Selling foid containing meat from home kitchen.
This eliminates not only YEG Bihari Kabab, but to 99.9% of the thousands of Edmontonians serving their communities. They are providing a cultural connection to their home and helping build new connections in their new home. Most depend on this income.
But Nawaz Karachi Biryani instead only saw his personal intetests. Shame on him.
YEG Bihari Kabab was a passion project, a hobby, started 4 months ago on July 11, 2025. By August we knew it was headed to bigger things. Your support was nothing short of a dream come true. By October we had began looking for commercial kitchens, staff, and equipment. Health issues, work and family commitments delayed work, but last week we hired our first staff and had interviewed a coupke of others.
We visited a kitchen just yesterday. But commercial kitchens were too expensive, and shated or community kitchens have pork and non-halal meats prepared there. Many supporters of YEG Bihari Kabab were opposed to such a facility.
So today's closure not only created speedbumps for a passion project, a new immigrant with amazing retrauntant experience and entrepreneur who arrived from Morroco just 1 month ago is now out of work.
We are wotking with some amazing people at AHS. Michael Khan helped the East African community establish safe Injiri bread making facilities. Now more than a 12 operate here. We should be greatful for such dedicated servants of the people of Alberta. He has offered any help we wanted.
What we have asked is this.
We will open our own commercial facility ourseves, because the support we have from the Pakistani, Bangladeshi, and Indian Muslim communities is amazing Alhumdulilah.
But for the many home-based cateters, there needs to be a Halal shared kitchen with nearby services like public transport, daycare, etc. Michael has offered help im getting the right designs and permits. Thank you AHS for your service to Albertans.
We look forwatd to serving you again starting sometime in 2026.

As for Nawaz Karachi Biryani...
Thank you Nawaz sahib for compelling AHS to act on something that by their own reckoning will have no impact and only creates headaches all around. Best wishes with your AHS approved one-legged Biryani.
