Great message ❤
We need to break the silence about something we’ve been seeing far too often on our social media pages: anti-Asian comments.
Anytime we talk about our amazing collaborations with Asian chefs, or vendors in Vancouver’s renowned Chinatown, we get comments like, “I don’t want Wuhan duck,” or “Will you sell bat wing soup next?” These are REAL comments, and others have gotten a little more graphic. It’s like a punch in the gut every time we come across them, so we’re moderating followers more closely as a result.
Then there are the more subtle questions. People see that we use Mandarin in some of our advertising, and folks ask if we’re owned by a Chinese group. We aren’t. We’ve always told the story of the Falk family openly and honestly. We are proud to be a Canadian, family-run farm operation with no need for outside investors. And we take even greater pride in the relationships we’ve developed with our very diverse customer base. Many customers are Chinese-Canadian, which is why we use Mandarin in some of our advertisements.
But that never sits right with us. We don’t WANT to assure people that the owners aren’t Asian. It’s hard to express how upsetting this is. Fraser Valley Specialty Poultry employs about 150 people, they mean the world to us, and we are a very ethnically diverse group of farmers and processors. Plus we serve a very diverse clientele of specialty restaurants and grocery stores – from French cafes to Chinese BBQ stands. And that’s our strength!
We celebrate our diversity. We know from experience that there is heightened creativity, insight, camaraderie, and the ability to solve problems from multiple perspectives when you bring people together from diverse backgrounds. We also know from experience that people love trying new food, like when we used to have potluck staff parties and we’d share dishes unique to our backgrounds. We create entire marketing campaigns that highlight this culinary diversity such as “Buy Local, Cook Global” where we featured flavours from throughout the world using local products.
So spoiler alert – all of our poultry is farmed, processed, and delivered in BC by people from MANY ethnic and cultural backgrounds. We know not everyone shares our views, but we kindly ask that if you can’t be kind, please keep scrolling. Hate speech is not welcome and will not be tolerated. We will delete your comment and ban you from our page.
In the words of Dr. Bonnie Henry, “Be kind, be calm, be safe.” And we take kindness very seriously.
