Coucou sweet community,

How have you been?

We have been a bit quiet these past few months, reminiscing on the last edition of Gula Gula, an edition that challenged us but also renewed our hope and belief in shared space and togetherness.

In this quiet turning of seasons, Gula Gula is taking space to grow, shed, (re)align, (re)gather, stretch toward a new shape ꩜

Organising a festival — we’ve learned — is a process not to underestimate. There are still quite some things to figure out, but what we can share already is a gentle invitation and a 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲: 𝟮𝟮-𝟮𝟯 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁, again at our cozy Ruiterijcomplex in Vilvoorde.

The dust has settled, the table has been cleared and the crew is sleeping. From the gentle sounds of Abel Ghekiere to the powerful synergy of Woolvs’ Large Ensemble, we very much enjoyed the last day of Gula Gula and hope you did too. Thanks again to all artists, visitors and helping hands for turning our vision into reality and who knows, maybe until next year?

First there was ambition, which became excitement, that became stress, which slightly became hopelessness from time to time. Until yesterday afternoon, when things started falling into place and suddenly there was mainly peace and love, because wauw, this one is going to be very very special.

We know that the weather isn’t super inviting (although it’s never as bad as it seems), but hopefully we’re inviting enough. Because oh boy, how excited are we to share this with you. This project has been shaped by a crew of over 50 volunteers who joined us in the previous days for the buildup.

Already a memorable moment: 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙧, 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩, 𝙘𝙖𝙢𝙚 𝙤𝙣. And we are more than sure that this communal, loving energy will set the mood throughout the weekend.

𝓟𝓻𝓪𝓬𝓽𝓲𝓬𝓮 𝓬𝓸𝓶𝓶𝓾𝓷𝓲𝓽𝔂, 𝓪𝓷𝓭 𝓳𝓸𝓲𝓷 𝓾𝓼 𝓪𝓻𝓸𝓾𝓷𝓭 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓽𝓪𝓫𝓵𝓮.

If love is a verb, we believe the same is true for community. It’s about searching, hearing, listening, being, feeling, and sharing. Next week, too, we want to put community forward as a verb, by searching together, listening to one another, and sharing.

Community festivals are popping up as if the times we live in are fertile ground for them to grow, or perhaps because these times make their necessity only clearer. Is it just a buzzword, or a hopeful evolution?

A TABLE.

We begin and end the festival with a communal meal. A table where everyone is welcome to join: from the front-row dancer to the production leader, from the entrance steward to the bar volunteer, from performer and musician to the passerby who’s letting his dog out in the park.

On 𝐒𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐨𝐨𝐧, 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟐 𝐭𝐨 𝟒 𝐩𝐦, there’s an open workshop with Silke Reyntjens to shape the table together by painting cloths and setting it up. Afterwards, we’ll serve the dish that begins every kids’ camp and brings the ultimate sense of home, so much so that everyone claims their mother’s version is the best: spaghetti. You’re welcome to enjoy a plate free of charge and take a seat at the table.

On 𝐒𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟏𝟖 𝐭𝐨 𝟏𝟗.𝟑𝟎 𝐩𝐦, we break bread at the final supper. Homemade by Janne Wantens, served with dips in every colour and flavour, a cheerful, colourful mix of diversity and stories.
