National Sorry Day

National Sorry Day is held each year on 26 May. It is a significant day for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, recognising the pain, loss and ongoing impacts experienced by the Stolen Generations β€” children who were forcibly removed from their families, communities and culture through past government policies.

From an Indigenous perspective, National Sorry Day is about truth-telling, healing, remembrance and survival. It honours the strength and resilience of our Elders, parents, children and communities who carried deep grief while continuing to hold onto culture, identity and connection to Country. It is a day to acknowledge stories that were silenced for far too long and to ensure they are never forgotten.

It is also a time to reflect on the importance of family, culture and belonging. For many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, the impacts of removal are still felt today through intergenerational trauma, disconnection from culture and loss of language and identity. Yet alongside that pain is extraordinary resilience, pride and the continuing strength of community.

National Sorry Day is not about blame. It is about understanding, compassion and walking together with respect. For non-Indigenous Australians, it is an opportunity to listen, learn and stand in solidarity with First Nations peoples. Even small acts of acknowledgment, kindness and willingness to understand our shared history can help build stronger relationships and a more united future.

When people come together with open hearts, honesty and respect, healing becomes possible. National Sorry Day reminds us that acknowledging the past is an important step towards reconciliation, hope and a future where all Australians feel seen, valued and connected.
