As our wedding season is getting ready to begin I am starting to get excited for all the beautiful things to come.
All the hours spent designing at my desk are exchanged for hours designing in the studio, turning visions and dreams into reality.

Bridal bouquets are what bring me the most stress and joy, often in equal measure. Every time, the moment before I start putting a bouquet together, I have a second or two of doubting my ability to be able to do it. A moment of impostor syndrome that I still feel even after more than 20 years of weddings. It’s a moment I have learned to love as it keeps me striving for better. It’s a moment that quickly passes as I start to work and remember that even though this bouquet is different to every other I have created, it’s something I have practiced for with all of the many that have come before.
Then the joy of creating kicks in.

A good martini moment makes my heart sing.

Whenever I can I like to pop in local elements. Supporting those growers closest to us provides fabulous fresh and robust florals and actually going out and picking my own ingredients is my favourite activity. Gently moving giant spider’s webs off a leaf I’m about to pick or checking that weirdly dark stem isn’t a snake’s tail before swinging my machete (we nearly had one shorter tree snake the other day!) makes it exciting too.

It’s these local things that make us just a little bit unique to here.

Research is taking the dog for a walk, going for a swim in the creek, working in the garden or just looking out the car window. It’s trialing things to see how long they last, noting where they grow, when they’re best picked. My favourite quiet season activity.

Julia and Alex’s reception was in a stunningly manicured private garden. How lucky we were to spend a little time here doing pretty things!

Choose a floral designer who knows your venue.

Each venue comes with its own unique challenges but an outdoor wedding has the added variance of weather to test your florist’s skills.

While for you rain may be the worst weather outcome, for your flowers it’s wind with heat being a close second. With the majority of venues outdoors for us up here in the tropics and the most comfortable time of year being when those trade winds blow most of the humidity away we need to constantly consider the elements in our designs.

Knowing the regular wind direction, which track the sun takes across the sky, how to read an in depth weather forecast and tide chart are all important for our work above and beyond just making pretty things.
Having mechanics with weight, heavy vases and wind resistant designs are a must.

When comparing floral quotes don’t just look at the bottom line. Ask if that bud vase is wind proof. Can those ceremony flowers withstand the heat long enough to be moved to your tables? Will your florist be onsite to move and secure flowers themselves?

There is no point paying for hopes and fantasy only to miss out on reality.

I try to sneak in a little touch of the tropics whenever there’s an opportunity. A caladium leaf here, a nepenthes pitcher there, the essence of everything that makes here unique.
Wandering around the garden with snips and a super long picking stick is my happy place. There’s a wealth of delights out there, both wonderful and wild.

On the manicured grounds of we worked with .com.au and .com.au to bring Zoe & Tyler’s elegant chic garden party wedding vision to life.

There’s a small window, at the very beginning and end of our wedding season, where I get the opportunity to use fresh hydrangeas. Always nail bitingly scary in October when it’s new, soft and the sun’s bite is worse than an angry Doberman but so worth the risk.
Oh how I wish we were busy when the wholesaler’s fridge is overflowing with hydrangea abundance in every colour and shape imaginable. Alas we are not. Instead I spend the summer designing for the coming winter and trying to find creative solutions to achieving the billowing generosity so effortlessly available to all those whose peak times match those of the flowers.

Quiet season is a time to explore possibilities, experiment, try new ideas and new ways to use the familiar.

Thanks to for the palm leaf manipulation inspiration. Always in awe of your amazing installations.

Spending the quiet season playing with ideas, making the most of time to think creatively, explore possibilities.

What better way to avoid summer heat and an overflowing inbox than to step through the soft white drapes into the crisp air-conditioned delight of with fellow creatives and to celebrate the Shack’s first birthday with a photoshoot. I love the endless possibilities here, the different moods of the rooms.

Stephanie and Katie have lovingly developed Hitcher’s Love Shack over the past year into Cairn’s number one all weather elopement and micro wedding venue. A year’s worth of couples saying “I do” and making memories to last a lifetime. Congratulations on a successful first year ladies!

In this world of globalisation, choosing local just feels like the right thing to do. To know the name of your growers (hi Ben 👋 ), what their farm looks like, knowing the flowers arriving at the studio were picked just the day before, exactly how long their journey took to get here not only brings us peace of mind knowing that we are getting the best quality, freshest flowers but also helping to sustain our local economy while treading a little more lightly on the world.

Being our hottest time of year here in the tropics I chose anthuriums for Lakota’s bouquet, taking advantage of their strength and stunning beauty.

I cried a few tears of joy when I saw .studios stunning photos.
