Madie and Jay had such a wonderful celebration with their family and friends, and their vision of black, white and deep red was an absolute sight to behold.

My favourite part of Sandra and Zander’s ceremony was scripted, but it was a spontaneous moment that made it zing!

Sandra is German, and so I opened the ceremony by saying “Hello, welcome und willkommen to the
wedding of Sandra and Zander!
Whether you say “G’day” or “Guten Tag,” we’re so happy you’re here!”

Her brother, Simon, was a groomsman and pre-ceremony I got him to double check my pronunciation of the German words I had written into the script. He was very helpful and because I asked for his help, he knew what was coming.

I got to the part of the ceremony where I was to say these words:
“With the camera focused on them,
Zander got down on one knee and, in
German, asked Sandra, “Willst du mich
heiraten?” - (villsht doo mikh hi-rah-ten)
- “Will you marry me?”
When your Australian boyfriend proposes
auf Deutsch, it’s only natural to respond
with a heartfelt “Natürlich!” (“Of
course!”).”

As natürlich was getting closer, my brain was freaking out, as I was realising I had forgotten the correct way to say it, so I delivered all the words up until that point and then popped the microphone in front of Simon, and he didn’t miss a beat and delivered the line perfectly!
It was magic.

Such a fantastic afternoon, with the rain holding out until just after they walked down the aisle.

Happy Halloween! 🎃 Today’s a perfect excuse to dive into the old photo albums and share some costume memories - from theatre roles to fancy dress parties and maybe even a witch hat or two! Halloween hasn’t really been a big tradition for me, but dressing up always adds a little magic. And yes, I would be so keen to bring that same flair to a fancy dress wedding - I promise I WON’T come as Watermelon Girl, although… from memory - she was a lot of fun!

As a celebrant, only about 10% or less of my working hours are spent at weddings.

It doesn’t happen much anymore, but when I first started out, I often had guests make conversation with me, saying things like, “Pretty good job to only work for 20 minutes on a Saturday.” To be honest, it made my blood boil!

Last week, during the school holidays, I woke up early because I wanted to write a ceremony and send it off before my kids got up. But my youngest woke while I was sitting in bed writing. She quietly lay next to me and watched as I edited a full script. It took about 20 minutes, though I had already spent an hour in a meeting with the couple and was just formatting the first draft and making some finishing touches to the love story section.

After I sent the email, my daughter said, “Wow, that took a long time - you do lots of work that isn’t at the wedding, Mum!” and I thought, “Yeah! I do.”

Gotta love a bit of validation from a 7 year old who thinks doing 20 minutes of work takes forever. 😂

Time is perhaps not on our side for the border dwellers between NSW and QLD for the next 6 months.

Such a delight to have more light in the evenings, but the mental load of making sure you are in the right place at the right time can get a little tiring.

For those of us on the NSW side, waking up on Sunday morning means losing an hour of sleep as the clocks spring forward, while Queensland stays the same.

So, while we’ll enjoy those later sunsets, we’ll be up a bit earlier, adjusting to the shift while keeping track of which side of the border is on what time! 🫠😃

I found an old instagram post from 6 years ago which was about the sweetest elopement where my dad and Meg from (now ) were the only witnesses on a rainy day at Wategos.
Meg insisted on taking this very cute photo which is now so precious.

As we watched the couple having some photos with their kids, dad said to me, “you’ve got the best job in the world, haven’t ya darling?”.
It’s pretty good, Dad.

In the weeks after losing my dad, I’ve actually felt really grateful to be a celebrant. Even when I’m riding waves of grief, and even when I don’t feel like leaving the house, once I’m there, I can immerse myself in the joy and happiness of a wedding. It allows me to feel a sense of normalcy, and I’m sure it’s helping me heal.

Surely that is right up there with one of the best jobs in the world.

PASSENGER PRINCESS APPRECIATION POST
As some of you following along would know, my father died recently, and it’s been a really sad and painful time.
Logistically it was made more difficult by the fact that my dad lived a 15 hour drive away from us on the South Coast.
This guy, , kindly drove our family the entire 30 hour journey there and back for the funeral - I think it was a personal challenge he set for himself, as he thrives on Acts of Service as a way of expressing his love.

I have a wedding up in Brisbane today and asked him if he would come with me to keep me company (and drive), and he happily agreed.

I feel so very grateful to have a partner who moves in close, offering support, in times of need.

Grateful for my mum who is hanging out with our kids, and our community of friends who are like family for providing meals, who collected cash to support us while we took time off work and put our dog in care; all the very practical and wonderful things, as well as kind and compassionate messages and flowers - thank you all so much.
