Your lawn wants a weekend off. Turns out, so do the insects.

We talked to Lars Roberts from UTAS about Let It Grow, a no-mow trial running right here in Launceston/Kanamaluka. The results are kind of mind-boggling. And his advice for getting started? Sit in a chair, make a cup of tea, and just watch.

In October 2024, Jenn Heggarty drove the first OzHarvest yellow van into Launceston with a one-person team, a clear purpose, and no roadmap. Less than two years later, OzHarvest Tasmania has rescued over 430,000 kilograms of food, supported 48 charity agencies across two cities, and is hoping to co-create, what will be an Australian-first shared food rescue infrastructure model right here in Launceston.

Jenn is the founding State Manager of OzHarvest Tasmania, and her story is one of the most compelling examples of community-driven change we have ever come across. She reversed the business plan, impact first, bricks and mortar can wait.

At Kinda.forward on 27 June, Jenn will deliver our keynote session: 'I didn't know how. I just knew why'. She will share what she has learned about building something from nothing, why Tasmania is uniquely placed to lead, and what a truly circular approach to food looks like at a community level.

This is a talk you will not want to miss.

Free to attend. Tickets available: www.wearekinda.com.au/kindaforward

What does it really take to build a sustainable fashion brand from the ground up?

Tamika Bannister has been crafting slow sustainable fashion, accessories and homewares from Launceston since 2010. The Spotted Quoll Studio was born out of a love for Tasmania's natural wonders, using organically grown natural fibres and producing predominantly right here in our own backyard.

At Kinda.forward on 27 June, Tamika will share a warts-and-all account of her journey. The vision, the reality, the lessons and the joy of building something that truly aligns with your values. Her message is one we want every person in that room to take home: sustainability is not a destination but a journey.

She will also have a collection of slow fashion and homewares on display for you to connect with on the day.

Free to attend. Tickets available: www.wearekinda.com.au/kindaforward

Meet Michael from the City of Launceston, a waste and recovery professional who has spent the past decade shaping Launceston's waste and recovery story.

From FOGO and recycling programs to reuse initiatives and the city's Sustainability Action Plan, the Sustainability Team has been driving circular outcomes for the organisation and the community since 2015.

At Kinda.forward Michael will share the City of Launceston's carbon story. What the numbers look like, what the plan is, and what it means for all of us.

What does a circular economy actually look like at a community level, beyond the buzzword?

Louise Foster, CEO of NRM North, has spent her career working at the intersection of sustainability, community engagement and strategic leadership. A proud Tasmanian, Louise brings a deep understanding of how natural resource management and local communities are inextricably linked.

At Kinda.forward on 27 June, Louise will join our closing panel, Community Connection and the Circular Economy, exploring how communities and local organisations drive real circular economy change from the ground up.

This is the conversation northern Tasmania needs to be having. Come and be part of it.

Dean Cracknell has spent his career helping everyday people change the places they live. As co-founder of the Town Team Movement, creator of Placemaking.Education, and co-instigator of the Tasmanian Alliance for Placemaking, Dean has built a career around one simple belief: that communities don't have to wait for someone else to fix things. They can just start.

A former strategic urban planner with 12 years in local government, Dean brings both the theory and the practical reality of what it actually takes to get people organised and moving in the same direction, without hierarchy, without bureaucracy, and without waiting for permission.

He is also a Board Member at LIFE Food Hub, part-owner of a community-owned regenerating forest in Tasmania, and the kind of person who will talk your ear off about placemaking if you give him half a chance. We are very glad he is coming.

At Kinda.forward on 27 June, Dean will share how everyday people can get started and organise in fun, non-hierarchical ways. He will also join our closing panel, Community Connection and the Circular Economy, bringing his characteristic straight-talking perspective on what community-led change actually looks like.

Free to attend. Tickets available: www.wearekinda.com.au/kindaforward
