A recent article in The Washington Post highlights a significant trend in the events industry: the move from single-use plastics to reusable serveware at concerts and stadiums.

Companies like Huskee are leading the way with innovative solutions, having sold approximately 2.67 million reusable cups across 57 countries. Their cup-exchange system allows users to swap their used HuskeeCups for freshly cleaned ones at participating events and outlets.

This shift not only reduces waste but also aligns with the growing expectations of attendees for environmentally responsible practices.

✅ Recent industry data shows that more than two-thirds of Australian event attendees consider environmental sustainability when choosing which events to attend[1].The Sunshine Coast Events Industry Association (SCEIA) demonstrated its understanding of this growing trend earlier this week with event professionals gathering at the University of the Sunshine Coast for Pollinate – a highly engaged and informative networking opportunity focussed on spreading sustainable ideas for events.

The event shone a spotlight on the emerging sustainability trends now shaping the future of the events industry with a clear message that environmentally and socially responsible events are no longer optional - they’re expected.

SCEIA President, Lenny Vance, said that it is not only audiences that are demanding greater environmental accountability - government funding bodies and corporate sponsors require sustainability planning as a key requirement for many public grants and private partnerships.

“A 2023 PwC Australia report found that 58% of corporate sponsors are now screening partnerships based on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) criteria, and sustainability commitments are increasingly tied to sponsorship decisions in the event and festival sectors,” said Mr Vance.

“It’s evident that the industry is shifting - from waste management to ethical sourcing, from active transport to social inclusion, and tonight was about arming our members with as much information and inspiration to take a lead in this space.”

Attendees heard from a dynamic panel of industry leaders who shared practical strategies, case studies, and bold ideas for embedding sustainability into every stage of event planning and delivery.

“The Sunshine Coast has a real opportunity to position itself as a leader in sustainable events and it was great to see a high level of enthusiasm and collaboration from the industry tonight,” said Mr Vance.
