The first artist to get a second entry in my recommendations here, this album is basically John Mayer roleplaying Neil Young or Crosby, Stills & Nash - that kind of “oldtimey” folk music sound is present with his frequent harmonica sound, steel guitar, and that raw feeling that’s evocative of never-ending summers and road trips down the coast, both somehow with nostalgic longing and triumphant pride.
I’ve always thought John Mayer was a pretty talented lyricist, and that definitely stands with this album, not to mention how catchy and memorable most of the melodies of the album are. A great album companion to a sit in a hammock with a lemonade, watching the summer sunset. If you’re a fan of artists like Bob Dylan, City and Colour or Iron & Wine, you’ll probably like this album.
