I received the loveliest compliment from a groomsman a few weeks ago. He said to me, “wow, I like you, you’re really calm.”
And honestly… it really stuck with me. Because I think that’s exactly what a celebrant should be.
A calm, steady presence. The person setting the tone for the rest of the day. Someone who can quietly absorb the nerves of the couple, their families, and sometimes even the vendors too.
Believe me… I may look calm. But internally? It’s usually another story.
I’m silently stressing about the weather forecast. The placement of the bridesmaids. Whether my Bluetooth is about to betray me. The guest in the front row filming on their iPad. A veil moments away from taking flight. A plane overhead at the exact wrong moment. The sweat building under my nose. The ant crawling up my leg mid-ceremony.
But part of my job is making sure none of that energy reaches you.
Because if I’m calm, it gives you the best possible chance to feel calm too. And that matters.
Your wedding ceremony shouldn’t feel stressful or performative. It should feel safe. Grounded. Easy. Like someone’s got you.
And if couples walk away feeling that? Then I reckon I’ve done my job properly.
