Want to get some photos of the Eta Aquarids meteor shower next week?

With the meteor shower peaking between May 5th and 7th, it's a great time to get some night time photos!

Here's a great way to start!

First, you'll need a tripod. Although the sturdier the better, you don't need to spend a fortune on a decent tripod that you'll only use now and again.

Next, you need to choose somewhere to take your photos then. Aim for somewhere away from cities to avoid light pollution. A nice scene or landscape for the foreground can give more spectacular results.

When setting up your phone or camera, you want to use manual mode.

Set your aperture or f/stop as low as possible to let in as much light as possible.

Set your shutter for a delayed release (a 2 or 5 second timer is good as this means your camera or phone won't be shaking when it starts taking the photo), and set your shutter speed to several seconds (this might show as ", for example 2" is 2 seconds). Depending on your equipment, the ideal time can vary, but trying 8 seconds is a good place to start.

But why not longer? If you leave your shutter open too long, the rotation of the earth will mean the stars start to turn to lines - these are star trails, and although these can create interesting photos, you don't want them if you're trying to photograph meteors.

Finally, set your ISO or gain higher. This is something that you will need to experiment with as it varies greatly between cameras and phones, but start by testing between 1600 and 3200. If you set it too high, though, you will get excess noise, colour spots and blotches in your photos.

Take lots of photos and tweak your settings as you go. Meteors can be unpredictable, so more photos equals more chances of capturing a great meteor shot.

Finally, don't forget to take the time to take in the show.
