A really good reason to get the family out tomorrow 👋

Bulimba Cars N Coffee (hosted by Queensland Retro Cruise Days & Nights) is happening at Memorial Park from 10am, with the HIS Project right next door at Bulimba Community Centre — and Dad Mode will be there.

Come and meet us, hear what we’re building for Brisbane dads and families, and have a go at our hair challenge. It’s practical, low-pressure and no experience is expected — which is very much the Dad Mode way.

Everyone who gets involved can also enter the draw to win tickets to an upcoming Braids + Beers session.

Nobody prepared me for how much dads actually want this 🍺

Every event we run, the same thing happens. Dads walk in a little unsure. They give it a go. And by the time the afternoon is done something has shifted - you can just see it in the room.

It's not about the braiding. It's about showing up. Doing something useful. Being in a space where nobody is judging you for not having it all figured out yet.

That's what we're building with Dad Mode. And every event, every message from a dad saying it was exactly what he needed - that's what keeps us going.

The moments that matter most as a dad are rarely the big ones 💪

They're the Tuesday morning when your daughter asks if you can do her hair and you say yes without hesitating. The daycare drop-off where she walks in looking like you knew exactly what you were doing. The small, quiet moment where your kid looks up at you and you can see that they trust you to handle it.

That's what confidence in fatherhood actually looks like. Not grand gestures. Just showing up in the everyday moments and being capable when it counts.

It starts with the basics. Dry, brushed hair before you begin. Understanding which hand holds and which hand moves. Getting close to the scalp early so the tension is right from the start. Keeping your sections small so the finish is clean and it lasts the whole day. And building the muscle memory somewhere forgiving before you're working on a moving, opinionated four year old who has opinions about everything - including how tight the braid is 🙌

These are small skills. But they build something bigger than a hairstyle. They build the kind of confidence that makes you a more capable, more present dad in the moments that actually matter.

Something has been happening across South East Queensland this year 👀

Dads are showing up. In Brendale, Birkdale, Burleigh Heads, Slacks Creek - room after room of fathers who decided to come along, give it a go and walk away with something useful.

Braids + Beers is now running right across SEQ and swipe through to find the one nearest you. Same great afternoon at every venue - just a different local brewery and a different room of dads who all showed up for the same reason.

Three things that actually make braiding easier 💪

✅ Section the hair before you start
Don't try to work with a full head of loose hair. Split it into sections first (top, middle and bottom) and clip or hold what you're not working on. It keeps everything clean and gives you control before you've even started.

✅ Tension is everything
Too loose and it falls out within the hour. Too tight and you've got a very unhappy kid on your hands. The sweet spot is a firm, consistent grip that keeps the braid neat without pulling at the root. This is the one thing that makes the biggest difference and the one thing you can only really learn by doing it.

✅ Work slowly until it becomes muscle memory
Every dad who comes to Braids + Beers thinks they need to be faster. They don't. Speed comes with repetition. Start slow, keep it consistent, and the neatness will follow. A braid that takes five minutes and holds all day beats a rushed one that falls apart before you've left the driveway.

These are the kinds of tips that sound simple but land completely differently when someone is standing next to you showing you in real time 🙌

I get asked a lot why I started Dad Mode 💬

The honest answer is that I kept seeing the same thing - dads who genuinely wanted to be more involved, more capable, more present. But every time they looked for support it either felt like it wasn't made for them or it asked them to show up in a way that just didn't feel natural.

So we built something different. Something that gives dads a practical reason to walk through the door - and lets the connection happen on its own from there.

What we've watched grow over the past few months has been something I'm genuinely proud of. Rooms full of dads who came alone and left with new skills, new confidence and a few new mates who get it.

That's Dad Mode. And we're just getting started 🙌
