Did You Know? A History of House Music [Part 1]

The term house music actually comes from a legendary Chicago club called "The Warehouse" (1977–1983). The club had a mostly black crowd who came to vibe to the sounds of resident DJ, Frankie Knuckles — who later earned the title "Godfather of House".

Frankie Knuckles got creative when he realized the records he had weren’t enough to keep the energy going. So, he started cutting and splicing tapes by hand to create new mixes that would keep the dancefloor alive. That experimental style became the roots of house music as we know it.

After The Warehouse closed, Frankie moved on to "The Power Plant". In the documentary, "Pump Up The Volume", he shares a cool story - the first time he saw the words “We play house music” was on a sign outside a bar on Chicago’s South Side.

Someone in the car joked, “That’s the kind of music you play at The Warehouse!” — and just like that, the name stuck.

So, from a Chicago club to a global movement —house music was born!

Guy's, I'm speaking from my heart — my own point of view. I’ve been DJing since 1992. I’ve seen sounds come and go, and I’ve seen how genres evolve.

Now, I know some of you aren’t feeling Amapiano. You call it commercial, or you feel like it’s stealing the spotlight. But hear me out - I listen to Amapiano, and I still play deep, soulful, badass house music. Deep House is in my soul. But I also vibe to Amapiano when it's done right.

I’m not converting. I’m not switching lanes. I’m just saying open your minds. There’s beautiful music out there. And some of these producers , they’re doing amazing work - DJ Maphorisa. Kabza De Small, DJ Stokie and at the top - Kelvin Momo. Let's not forget the vocalists - Babalwa M, Nia Pearl, Nkosazana Daughter, and Mzizi, to name a few.

I’m not here to be blacklisted or judged. I haven’t joined the mafia. I’ve just opened my ear — and I hear good music. That’s all I’m asking you to do too.
