When and where first modern pills were created?

02/12/2025

Did you know modern medicine depends on an ancient animal?
For decades, Big Pharma relied on the blue blood of horseshoe crabs — “living fossils” older than the dinosaurs — to test vaccines, insulin, antibiotics, and every injectable drug for deadly bacterial toxins. Their blood can detect endotoxins in trillion-level concentrations, something no other natural substance can do.

But this miracle came at a cost: overharvesting pushed these animals to the edge of extinction. Half a million crabs are taken every year, and many never survive the blood extraction. During the COVID-19 vaccine rush, the situation became critical.

The good news?
Scientists engineered a safe alternative — recombinant Factor C — and in 2024 regulators finally recognized it as a full replacement. This means pharma can move to cruelty-free, sustainable testing, and horseshoe crabs may finally get a chance to recover.

These creatures saved us for decades. Now it’s our responsibility to save them.

Why bring back mammoths when elephants, cheetahs and axolotls need help right now?
I talked about ancient DNA for years and got this question hundreds of times — and today I explain why de-extinction is not just about “a mammoth,” but about technologies that save living species and even help humans: artificial wombs, vaccines, gene editing, conservation genetics.

If you want a part 2 about genetic diversity and ancient DNA in modern conservation — tell me in comments ❤️

Can we read the history of Earth right from ancient DNA? Not from shapes of skulls, not from chemical properties of stones or soil but from the molecules.

In 1984 scientists tried something that looked impossible: to read DNA from a museum quagga, an animal that disappeared in the 19th century.
That tiny fragment of preserved tissue became the first ancient DNA ever sequenced — the moment a completely new science was born.

Today ancient DNA comes from bones, teeth, tools, plants, soil, pottery, and even museum collections. And every fragment helps us rebuild a part of Earth’s story.

If you want more stories about how ancient DNA works and what it can reveal — write in the comments.

:🐾 This week is Animal Shelter Appreciation Week — and I want to tell you about those we saved, and those we still fight for.
Bulka, Puri, Marty, Hasya, Pashtet — each of them has a story. Some happy, some heartbreaking, but all about love and care. 💙

We’re Kotoprovod — a small volunteer project helping stray cats and dogs in Armenia.
We rescue, treat, sterilize, and find them homes around the world 🌍 — from Armenia to Spain, from Finland to Thailand. We created GitaZone to create science content and rise funds and attention for Kotoprovod. And tell their stories.

Every view, like, and repost helps our animals get closer to finding their family.
💌 Support us or any shelter you trust — even the smallest action makes a big difference.

🎃 Halloween warning: this pumpkin bites back! 👻
I thought I was just cooking dinner — but my hand turned into a mummy’s!
Turns out, there’s a real condition called Squash Hands — a creepy allergic reaction from raw pumpkin or zucchini.
This Halloween, beware what you carve… it might carve you back. 😱

25 years ago, a boy in the Siberian tundra found tusks sticking out of the frozen ground. 🐘❄️
This is the unbelievable story of the Jarkov Mammoth — how a 23-ton block of ice containing a 20,000-year-old giant was airlifted across the Arctic and preserved in an underground ice cave museum.
