Stop looking for the Perfect Formula!

When you start a wedding planning business, you naturally look at what other planners are doing.

How much they charge, how they work with clients, what they post on Instagram, what packages they offer.

And you may think there is a formula you haven’t figured out yet.

There isn’t.

What works for one planner may be completely wrong for another.

Your market is different. Your clients are different. Your costs, experience, team and business goals are different too. Your personal way of life!

Learn from other people, absolutely! Take courses, ask questions, watch what works.

But then test it! Keep what works. Change what doesn’t.
And don’t be afraid to change it again a year or 6 months later.

Your business is supposed to evolve with you.

People sometimes ask me where I studied wedding planning.

Answer is… nowhere.

There isn’t a university that teaches this profession. There are private courses.

You learn by doing the job. And once you start, the learning never really ends.

When I planned my first weddings almost ten years ago, Instagram looked different, Pinterest wasn’t what it is today, AI didn’t exist, and couples expected something completely different from what they expect now.

That’s why I still go to conferences, workshops and industry events. I join FAM trips, follow market research, stay involved in professional associations and simply pay attention to what’s happening around me.

Every destination, venue, conversation and event teaches me something I didn’t know before.

Sometimes it’s a practical idea, a new contact, a different way of looking at the same situation.

Our profession doesn’t stand still.

I always smile when I look back at this wedding.

Three days on Langkawi Island with the couple’s closest family and friends.

People travelled from different countries, met each other for the first time and, somewhere between the welcome dinner and the last evening together, became one big family.

The celebration beautifully combined cultural traditions with a modern wedding experience. There was a henna party, a modern ceremony and several pre- and post-wedding lunches and dinners where everyone simply spent time together, talked, laughed and got to know one another.

I love this approach. A wedding is not only about one day. Sometimes the days around it become just as meaningful.

FAM means familiarization trip.

Many use this word, but not everyone treats it this way.

I am talking here about FAM trips created to discover a destination or a region, not one venue or one hotel group. That format is different.

When the goal is to understand the region, you move.

Since we started planning FAM trips, I often hear interesting questions from planners.

Which hotel will we stay in? How much free time will we have? Can I go to the spa? Can I go shopping?

And every time I think the same thing:

Are you coming to discover the destination, or to enjoy the destination?

A real destination FAM trip is not a vacation with a few site visits. It is a business trip.

You move from hotel to hotel, from venue to venue, sometimes from one area to another.

You see the spa during inspection, not during treatment. You see the pool, but probably not from a sunbed.

So before saying yes to a FAM trip, ask yourself:

Am I ready to understand this place as a planner, not only enjoy it as a tourist?
